Amos, Chapter 8

עמוס ח

Amos sees a basket of summer fruit, for the end is come upon Israel; those who swallow up the needy and falsify the balances will not be forgotten, the sun shall go down at noon, and a famine shall come of hearing the words of Hashem.

A basket of summer fruit

8:1Thus has the Lord Hashem showed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

אכֹּ֥ה הִרְאַ֖נִי אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֖ה כְּל֥וּב קָֽיִץ׃

8:2And He said, “Amos, what see you?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then said Hashem unto me, “The end is come upon My people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

8:3And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, says the Lord Hashem: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.”

גוְהֵילִ֜ילוּ שִׁיר֤וֹת הֵיכָל֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה רַ֣ב הַפֶּ֔גֶר בְּכָל־מָק֖וֹם הִשְׁלִ֥יךְ הָֽס׃

You that swallow up the needy

8:4Hear this, O you that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

דשִׁמְעוּ־זֹ֕את הַשֹּׁאֲפִ֖ים אֶבְי֑וֹן וְלַשְׁבִּ֖ית עֲנִיֵּי (כתיב ענוי)־אָֽרֶץ׃

8:5Saying, “When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

8:6That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?”

ולִקְנ֤וֹת בַּכֶּ֨סֶף֙ דַּלִּ֔ים וְאֶבְי֖וֹן בַּעֲב֣וּר נַעֲלָ֑יִם וּמַפַּ֥ל בַּ֖ר נַשְׁבִּֽיר׃

8:7Hashem has sworn by the excellency of Ya’akov (Jacob), “Surely I will never forget any of their works.”

זנִשְׁבַּ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה בִּגְא֣וֹן יַעֲקֹ֑ב אִם־אֶשְׁכַּ֥ח לָנֶ֖צַח כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂיהֶֽם׃

8:8Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwells therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

חהַ֤עַל זֹאת֙ לֹֽא־תִרְגַּ֣ז הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאָבַ֖ל כָּל־יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֑הּ וְעָלְתָ֤ה כָאֹר֙ כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְנִגְרְשָׁ֥ה וְנִשְׁקְעָ֖ה (כתיב ונשקה) כִּיא֥וֹר מִצְרָֽיִם׃

The sun goes down at noon

8:9And it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord Hashem, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

טוְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם וְהַחֲשַׁכְתִּ֥י לָאָ֖רֶץ בְּי֥וֹם אֽוֹר׃

8:10And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

A famine of the word of Hashem

8:11Behold, the days come, says the Lord Hashem, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Hashem:

8:12And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Hashem, and shall not find it.

יבוְנָעוּ֙ מִיָּ֣ם עַד־יָ֔ם וּמִצָּפ֖וֹן וְעַד־מִזְרָ֑ח יְשֽׁוֹטְט֛וּ לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ אֶת־דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יִמְצָֽאוּ׃

8:13In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

יגבַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא תִּ֠תְעַלַּפְנָה הַבְּתוּלֹ֧ת הַיָּפ֛וֹת וְהַבַּחוּרִ֖ים בַּצָּמָֽא׃

8:14They that swear by the sin of Shomron (Samaria), and say, “Your god, O Dan, lives;” and, “The manner of Be’er Sheva (Beer-sheba) lives;” even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

ידהַנִּשְׁבָּעִים֙ בְּאַשְׁמַ֣ת שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וְאָמְר֗וּ חֵ֤י אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ דָּ֔ן וְחֵ֖י דֶּ֣רֶךְ בְּאֵֽר־שָׁ֑בַע וְנָפְל֖וּ וְלֹא־יָק֥וּמוּ עֽוֹד׃

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
