2 Kings, Chapter 22

מלכים ב כב

Yoshiyahu, king at eight, does right and sends Shafan to have the house of Hashem repaired; Chilkiyahu the high priest finds the book of the Torah, the king rends his clothes when it is read, and Chuldah the prophetess speaks Hashem’s word of evil upon the place and of peace for the king.

22:1Yoshiyahu (Josiah) was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). And his mother’s name was Yedidah (Jedidah), the daughter of Adayah (Adaiah) of Botzkat (Boscath).

אבֶּן־שְׁמֹנֶ֤ה שָׁנָה֙ יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ בְמָלְכ֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וְאַחַת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ יְדִידָ֥ה בַת־עֲדָ֖יָה מִבָּצְקַֽת׃

22:2And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

בוַיַּ֥עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ בְּכָל־דֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֔יו וְלֹא־סָ֖ר יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃

The repair of the house of Hashem

22:3And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Yoshiyahu, that the king sent Shafan (Shaphan) the son of Atzalyahu (Azaliah), the son of Meshulam (Meshullam), the scribe, to the house of Hashem, saying,

22:4“Go up to Chilkiyahu (Hilkiah) the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of Hashem, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:

דעֲלֵ֗ה אֶל־חִלְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֔וֹל וְיַתֵּ֣ם אֶת־הַכֶּ֔סֶף הַמּוּבָ֖א בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָסְפ֛וּ שֹׁמְרֵ֥י הַסַּ֖ף מֵאֵ֥ת הָעָֽם׃

22:5And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of Hashem: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of Hashem, to repair the breaches of the house,

22:6Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house.”

ולֶחָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וְלַבֹּנִ֖ים וְלַגֹּֽדְרִ֑ים וְלִקְנ֤וֹת עֵצִים֙ וְאַבְנֵ֣י מַחְצֵ֔ב לְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־הַבָּֽיִת׃

22:7Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.

זאַ֚ךְ לֹא־יֵחָשֵׁ֣ב אִתָּ֔ם הַכֶּ֖סֶף הַנִּתָּ֣ן עַל־יָדָ֑ם כִּ֥י בֶאֱמוּנָ֖ה הֵ֥ם עֹשִֽׂים׃

The book of the Torah found

22:8And Chilkiyahu the high priest said unto Shafan the scribe, “I have found the book of the Torah in the house of Hashem.” And Chilkiyah gave the book to Shafan, and he read it.

22:9And Shafan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of Hashem.”

22:10And Shafan the scribe showed the king, saying, “Chilkiyah the priest has delivered me a book.” And Shafan read it before the king.

יוַיַּגֵּ֞ד שָׁפָ֤ן הַסֹּפֵר֙ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֔ר סֵ֚פֶר נָ֣תַן לִ֔י חִלְקִיָּ֖ה הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וַיִּקְרָאֵ֥הוּ שָׁפָ֖ן לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

22:11And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the Torah, that he rent his clothes.

יאוַֽיְהִי֙ כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֖י סֵ֣פֶר הַתּוֹרָ֑ה וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָֽיו׃

22:12And the king commanded Chilkiyah the priest, and Achikam (Ahikam) the son of Shafan, and Achbor the son of Michayah (Michaiah), and Shafan the scribe, and Asayah (Asahiah) a servant of the king’s, saying,

22:13“Go you, inquire of Hashem for me, and for the people, and for all Yehudah (Judah), concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of Hashem that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.”

The word of Chuldah the prophetess

22:14So Chilkiyahu the priest, and Achikam, and Achbor, and Shafan, and Asayah, went unto Chuldah (Huldah) the prophetess, the wife of Shalum (Shallum) the son of Tikvah, the son of Charchas (Harhas), keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Yerushalayim in the college;) and they communed with her.

22:15And she said unto them, “Thus says Hashem God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,

טווַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה־אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִמְר֣וּ לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃

22:16‘Thus says Hashem, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Yehudah has read:

טזכֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י מֵבִ֥יא רָעָ֛ה אֶל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וְעַל־יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו אֵ֚ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י הַסֵּ֔פֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר קָרָ֖א מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃

22:17Because they have forsaken Me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore My wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.’

22:18But to the king of Yehudah which sent you to inquire of Hashem, thus shall you say to him, ‘Thus says Hashem God of Israel, As touching the words which you have heard;

22:19Because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself before Hashem, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have rent your clothes, and wept before Me; I also have heard you, says Hashem.

22:20Behold therefore, I will gather you unto your fathers, and you shall be gathered into your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place.’” And they brought the king word again.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
