2 Kings, Chapter 21

Menashe reigns fifty-five years, rebuilds the high places, sets altars and a graven image in the house of Hashem and sheds much innocent blood; Hashem says by the prophets that He will bring evil upon Yerushalayim and Yehudah; his son Amon does evil, is slain by his servants, and Yoshiyahu is made king.

The sins of Menashe

21:1Menashe (Manasseh) was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty and five years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). And his mother’s name was Cheftzi-Vah (Hephzi-bah).

21:2And he did that which was evil in the sight of Hashem, after the abominations of the heathen, whom Hashem cast out before the children of Israel.

21:3For he built up again the high places which Chizkiyahu (Hezekiah) his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Ba’al (Baal), and made a grove, as did Achav (Ahab) king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

21:4And he built altars in the house of Hashem, of which Hashem said, “In Yerushalayim will I put My name.”

21:5And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of Hashem.

21:6And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of Hashem, to provoke Him to anger.

21:7And he set a graven image of the grove that he had made in the house, of which Hashem said to David, and to Shlomo (Solomon) his son, “In this house, and in Yerushalayim, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put My name for ever:

21:8Neither will I make the feet of Israel move any more out of the land which I gave their fathers; only if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the Torah that My servant Moshe (Moses) commanded them.”

21:9But they hearkened not: and Menashe seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom Hashem destroyed before the children of Israel.

Hashem’s word against Yerushalayim

21:10And Hashem spoke by His servants the prophets, saying,

21:11“Because Menashe king of Yehudah (Judah) has done these abominations, and has done wickedly above all that the Emori (Amorites) did, which were before him, and has made Yehudah also to sin with his idols:

21:12Therefore thus says Hashem God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Yerushalayim and Yehudah, that whosoever hears of it, both his ears shall tingle.

21:13And I will stretch over Yerushalayim the line of Shomron (Samaria), and the plummet of the house of Achav: and I will wipe Yerushalayim as a man wipes a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.

21:14And I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies;

21:15Because they have done that which was evil in My sight, and have provoked Me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), even unto this day.’”

The end of Menashe’s reign

21:16Moreover Menashe shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Yerushalayim from one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Yehudah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of Hashem.

21:17Now the rest of the acts of Menashe, and all that he did, and his sin that he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?

21:18And Menashe slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.

The reign of Amon

21:19Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Yerushalayim. And his mother’s name was Meshulemet (Meshullemeth), the daughter of Charutz (Haruz) of Yotvah (Jotbah).

21:20And he did that which was evil in the sight of Hashem, as his father Menashe did.

21:21And he walked in all the way that his father walked in, and served the idols that his father served, and worshipped them:

21:22And he forsook Hashem God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of Hashem.

21:23And the servants of Amon conspired against him, and slew the king in his own house.

21:24And the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Yoshiyahu (Josiah) his son king in his stead.

21:25Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?

21:26And he was buried in his sepulchre in the garden of Uzza: and Yoshiyahu his son reigned in his stead.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
