2 Chronicles, Chapter 28

Achaz reigns sixteen years in Yerushalayim and serves the Be’alim; Hashem gives Yehudah into the hand of Aram and of Pekach king of Israel, the prophet Oded has the captives sent back to Yericho, and Achaz turns to the kings of Ashur, shuts the doors of the house of Hashem, and dies.

28:1Achaz (Ahaz) was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem): but he did not that which was right in the sight of Hashem, like David his father:

28:2For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Be’alim (Baalim).

28:3Moreover he burnt incense in Gei Ben-Hinnom (the valley of the son of Hinnom), and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom Hashem had cast out before the children of Israel.

28:4He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

Aram and Israel strike Yehudah

28:5Wherefore Hashem his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram (Syria); and they struck him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Darmesek (Damascus). And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with a great slaughter.

28:6For Pekach (Pekah) the son of Remalyahu (Remaliah) slew in Yehudah (Judah) a hundred and twenty thousand in one day, which were all valiant men; because they had forsaken Hashem God of their fathers.

28:7And Zichri, a mighty man of Efrayim (Ephraim), slew Ma’aseyahu (Maaseiah) the king’s son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, and Elkanah that was next to the king.

28:8And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Shomron (Samaria).

Oded and the captives

28:9But a prophet of Hashem was there, whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Shomron, and said unto them, “Behold, because Hashem God of your fathers was angry with Yehudah, He has delivered them into your hand, and you have slain them in a rage that reaches up unto heaven.

28:10And now you purpose to keep under the children of Yehudah and Yerushalayim for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against Hashem your God?

28:11Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which you have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of Hashem is upon you.”

28:12Then certain of the heads of the children of Efrayim, Azaryahu (Azariah) the son of Yehochanan (Johanan), Berechyahu (Berechiah) the son of Meshilemot (Meshillemoth), and Yechizkiyahu (Jehizkiah) the son of Shalum (Shallum), and Amasa the son of Chadlai (Hadlai), stood up against them that came from the war,

28:13And said unto them, “You shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against Hashem already, you intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.”

28:14So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation.

28:15And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon donkeys, and brought them to Yericho (Jericho), the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Shomron.

Achaz turns to Ashur

28:16At that time did king Achaz send unto the kings of Ashur (Assyria) to help him.

28:17For again the Edomim (Edomites) had come and struck Yehudah, and carried away captives.

28:18The Pelishtim (Philistines) also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Yehudah, and had taken Beit Shemesh (Beth-shemesh), and Ayalon (Ajalon), and Gederot (Gederoth), and Socho (Shocho) with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.

28:19For Hashem brought Yehudah low because of Achaz king of Israel; for he made Yehudah naked, and transgressed sore against Hashem.

28:20And Tilgat-Pilne’eser (Tilgath-pilneser) king of Ashur came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.

28:21For Achaz took away a portion out of the house of Hashem, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Ashur: but he helped him not.

28:22And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against Hashem: this is that king Achaz.

28:23For he sacrificed unto the gods of Darmesek, which struck him: and he said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

28:24And Achaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of Hashem, and he made him altars in every corner of Yerushalayim.

28:25And in every several city of Yehudah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger Hashem God of his fathers.

The death of Achaz

28:26Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Yehudah and Israel.

28:27And Achaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Yerushalayim: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Yechizkiyahu (Hezekiah) his son reigned in his stead.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
