Tenakh Study · 2 Chronicles 2:1–17

2 Chronicles, Chapter 2

Shlomo counts out bearers, hewers and overseers, and asks Churam king of Tzor for cedar and timber from Levanon and a skilled craftsman; Churam blesses Hashem, sends a craftsman, the son of a woman of Dan, and promises timber by sea to Yafo, and Shlomo numbers the strangers in the land.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. This chapter is 2:2–18 in most English Bibles: verse 1 here is verse 2 there, and so on.

2:1And Shlomo (Solomon) told out seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.

Shlomo’s message to Churam

2:2And Shlomo sent to Churam (Huram) the king of Tzor (Tyre), saying, “As you did deal with David my father, and did send him cedars to build him a house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.

2:3Behold, I build a house to the name of Hashem my God, to dedicate it to Him, and to burn before Him sweet incense, and for the continual showbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of Hashem our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.

2:4And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.

2:5But who is able to build Him a house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain Him? who am I then, that I should build Him a house, save only to burn sacrifice before Him?

2:6Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Yehudah (Judah) and in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), whom David my father did provide.

2:7Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Levanon (Lebanon): for I know that your servants can skill to cut timber in Levanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with your servants,

2:8Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great.

2:9And, behold, I will give to your servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.”

Churam’s answer

2:10Then Churam the king of Tzor answered in writing, which he sent to Shlomo, “Because Hashem has loved His people, He has made you king over them.”

2:11Churam said moreover, “Blessed be Hashem God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build a house for Hashem, and a house for his kingdom.

2:12And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Churam my father’s,

2:13The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tzor, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in bronze, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be put to him, with your cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David your father.

2:14Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord has spoken of, let him send unto his servants:

2:15And we will cut wood out of Levanon, as much as you shall need: and we will bring it to you in floats by sea to Yafo (Joppa); and you shall carry it up to Yerushalayim.”

The strangers numbered

2:16And Shlomo numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found a hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.

2:17And he set seventy thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and eighty thousand to be hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people a work.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
