Tenakh Study · 1 Samuel 24:1–23

1 Samuel, Chapter 24

David dwells in the strongholds of Ein Gedi; Shaul seeks him there and goes into a cave, where David cuts off the skirt of his robe but will not lift his hand against Hashem’s anointed; David calls after Shaul, who weeps, owns that David will be king, and makes him swear not to cut off his seed.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 23:29 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–23 here are 24:1–22 in most English Bibles.

24:1And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at Ein Gedi (En-gedi).

In the cave

24:2And it came to pass, when Shaul (Saul) was returned from following the Pelishtim (Philistines), that it was told him, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Ein Gedi.”

24:3Then Shaul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

24:4And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Shaul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

24:5And the men of David said unto him, “Behold the day of which Hashem said unto you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it shall seem good unto you.’” Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Shaul’s robe privily.

24:6And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off Shaul’s skirt.

24:7And he said unto his men, “Hashem forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, Hashem’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of Hashem.”

24:8So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Shaul. But Shaul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

David speaks to Shaul

24:9David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Shaul, saying, “My lord the king.” And when Shaul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

24:10And David said to Shaul, “Wherefore hear you men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks your hurt’?

24:11Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that Hashem had delivered you today into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill you: but my eye spared you; and I said, ‘I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Hashem’s anointed.’

24:12Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and killed you not, know you and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

24:13Hashem judge between me and you, and Hashem avenge me of you: but my hand shall not be upon you.

24:14As says the proverb of the ancients, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked’: but my hand shall not be upon you.

24:15After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom do you pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

24:16Hashem therefore be judge, and judge between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.”

Shaul’s answer

24:17And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Shaul, that Shaul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And Shaul lifted up his voice, and wept.

24:18And he said to David, “You are more righteous than I: for you have rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded you evil.

24:19And you have showed this day how that you have dealt well with me: forasmuch as when Hashem had delivered me into your hand, you killed me not.

24:20For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Hashem reward you good for that you have done unto me this day.

24:21And now, behold, I know well that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.

24:22Swear now therefore unto me by Hashem, that you will not cut off my seed after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”

24:23And David swore unto Shaul. And Shaul went home; but David and his men got them up unto the hold.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
