Text (469) 608-99441 Samuel, Chapter 23
David inquires of Hashem and saves Ke’ilah from the Pelishtim, then leaves before its men can deliver him up to Shaul; Yehonatan strengthens him in the wilderness of Zif, the Zifim betray him to Shaul, and Shaul, closing in at Ma’on, turns back to meet the Pelishtim.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 23:29 of most English Bibles is 24:1 here.
23:1Then they told David, saying, “Behold, the Pelishtim (Philistines) fight against Ke’ilah (Keilah), and they rob the threshingfloors.”
23:2Therefore David inquired of Hashem, saying, “Shall I go and strike these Pelishtim?” And Hashem said unto David, “Go, and strike the Pelishtim, and save Ke’ilah.”
23:3And David’s men said unto him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Yehudah (Judah): how much more then if we come to Ke’ilah against the armies of the Pelishtim?”
23:4Then David inquired of Hashem yet again. And Hashem answered him and said, “Arise, go down to Ke’ilah; for I will deliver the Pelishtim into your hand.”
23:5So David and his men went to Ke’ilah, and fought with the Pelishtim, and brought away their cattle, and struck them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Ke’ilah.
23:6And it came to pass, when Evyatar (Abiathar) the son of Achimelech (Ahimelech) fled to David to Ke’ilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
23:7And it was told Shaul (Saul) that David was come to Ke’ilah. And Shaul said, “God has delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that has gates and bars.”
23:8And Shaul called all the people together to war, to go down to Ke’ilah, to besiege David and his men.
23:9And David knew that Shaul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Evyatar the priest, “Bring hither the ephod.”
23:10Then said David, “O Hashem God of Israel, Your servant has certainly heard that Shaul seeks to come to Ke’ilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
23:11Will the men of Ke’ilah deliver me up into his hand? will Shaul come down, as Your servant has heard? O Hashem God of Israel, I beseech You, tell Your servant.” And Hashem said, “He will come down.”
23:12Then said David, “Will the men of Ke’ilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Shaul?” And Hashem said, “They will deliver you up.”
23:13Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Ke’ilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Shaul that David was escaped from Ke’ilah; and he forbore to go forth.
23:14And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Zif (Ziph). And Shaul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
23:15And David saw that Shaul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Zif in a wood.
23:16And Yehonatan (Jonathan) Shaul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
23:17And he said unto him, “Fear not: for the hand of Shaul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto you; and that also Shaul my father knows.”
23:18And they two made a covenant before Hashem: and David abode in the wood, and Yehonatan went to his house.
23:19Then came up the Zifim (Ziphites) to Shaul to Giv’ah (Gibeah), saying, “Does not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Chachilah (Hachilah), which is on the south of Yeshimon (Jeshimon)?
23:20Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.”
23:21And Shaul said, “Blessed be you of Hashem; for you have compassion on me.
23:22Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who has seen him there: for it is told me that he deals very subtly.
23:23See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself, and come you again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Yehudah.”
23:24And they arose, and went to Zif before Shaul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Ma’on (Maon), in the plain on the south of Yeshimon.
23:25Shaul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Ma’on. And when Shaul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Ma’on.
23:26And Shaul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear of Shaul; for Shaul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
23:27But there came a messenger unto Shaul, saying, “Haste you, and come; for the Pelishtim have invaded the land.”
23:28Wherefore Shaul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Pelishtim: therefore they called that place Sela HaMachlekot (Sela-hammahlekoth).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
