Text (469) 608-99441 Kings, Chapter 12
Rechav’am goes to Shechem to be made king, forsakes the counsel of the old men and answers the people roughly, so Israel rebels against the house of David and makes Yarov’am king; Shema’yah forbids the war, and Yarov’am sets up two calves of gold in Beit El and Dan and ordains a feast of his own.
12:1And Rechav’am (Rehoboam) went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
12:2And it came to pass, when Yarov’am (Jeroboam) the son of Nevat (Nebat), who was yet in Mitzrayim (Egypt), heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Shlomo (Solomon), and Yarov’am dwelt in Mitzrayim;)
12:3That they sent and called him. And Yarov’am and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke unto Rechav’am, saying,
12:4“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
12:5And he said unto them, “Depart yet for three days, then come again to me.” And the people departed.
12:6And king Rechav’am consulted with the old men, that stood before Shlomo his father while he yet lived, and said, “How do you advise that I may answer this people?”
12:7And they spoke unto him, saying, “If you will be a servant unto this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.”
12:8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
12:9And he said unto them, “What counsel give you that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke which your father did put upon us lighter’?”
12:10And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying, “Thus shall you speak unto this people that spoke unto you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you it lighter unto us’; thus shall you say unto them, ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
12:11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12:12So Yarov’am and all the people came to Rechav’am the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
12:13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
12:14And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
12:15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from Hashem, that He might perform His saying, which Hashem spoke by Achiyah (Ahijah) the Shiloni (Shilonite) unto Yarov’am the son of Nevat.
12:16So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Yishai (Jesse): to your tents, O Israel: now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed unto their tents.
12:17But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Yehudah (Judah), Rechav’am reigned over them.
12:18Then king Rechav’am sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rechav’am made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
12:19So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
12:20And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Yarov’am was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Yehudah only.
12:21And when Rechav’am was come to Yerushalayim, he assembled all the house of Yehudah, with the tribe of Binyamin (Benjamin), a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rechav’am the son of Shlomo.
12:22But the word of God came unto Shema’yah (Shemaiah) the man of God, saying,
12:23“Speak unto Rechav’am, the son of Shlomo, king of Yehudah, and unto all the house of Yehudah and Binyamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
12:24‘Thus says Hashem, You shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from Me.’” They hearkened therefore to the word of Hashem, and returned to depart, according to the word of Hashem.
12:25Then Yarov’am built Shechem in mount Efrayim (Ephraim), and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penu’el (Penuel).
12:26And Yarov’am said in his heart, “Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
12:27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of Hashem at Yerushalayim, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rechav’am king of Yehudah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rechav’am king of Yehudah.”
12:28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, “It is too much for you to go up to Yerushalayim: behold your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Mitzrayim.”
12:29And he set the one in Beit El (Bethel), and the other put he in Dan.
12:30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
12:31And he made a house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
12:32And Yarov’am ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Yehudah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beit El, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beit El the priests of the high places which he had made.
12:33So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beit El the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Kings they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 4–5 (4:21–34 there is 5:1–14 here), 18 and 20 (where a sentence is divided at a different place) and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
