1 Kings, Chapter 11

Shlomo’s many foreign wives turn his heart after Ashtoret, Milkom, Kemosh and Molech, and Hashem says He will rend the kingdom from his son; Hadad the Edomi and Rezon rise up against him, the prophet Achiyah gives Yarov’am ten tribes, and Shlomo dies after forty years and Rechav’am reigns.

11:1But king Shlomo (Solomon) loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Par’oh (Pharaoh), women of the Mo’avim (Moabites), Ammonim (Ammonites), Edomim (Edomites), Tzidonim (Zidonians), and Chittim (Hittites);

11:2Of the nations concerning which Hashem said unto the children of Israel, “You shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods”: Shlomo clung unto these in love.

11:3And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.

11:4For it came to pass, when Shlomo was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with Hashem his God, as was the heart of David his father.

11:5For Shlomo went after Ashtoret (Ashtoreth) the goddess of the Tzidonim, and after Milkom (Milcom) the abomination of the Ammonim.

11:6And Shlomo did evil in the sight of Hashem, and went not fully after Hashem, as did David his father.

11:7Then did Shlomo build a high place for Kemosh (Chemosh), the abomination of Mo’av (Moab), in the hill that is before Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

11:8And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

Hashem is angry with Shlomo

11:9And Hashem was angry with Shlomo, because his heart was turned from Hashem God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,

11:10And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which Hashem commanded.

11:11Wherefore Hashem said unto Shlomo, “Forasmuch as this is done of you, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely rend the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.

11:12Notwithstanding in your days I will not do it for David your father’s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of your son.

11:13Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to your son for David My servant’s sake, and for Yerushalayim’s sake which I have chosen.”

Hadad the Edomi

11:14And Hashem stirred up an adversary unto Shlomo, Hadad the Edomi (Edomite): he was of the king’s seed in Edom.

11:15For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Yo’av (Joab) the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had struck every male in Edom;

11:16(For six months did Yo’av remain there with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom:)

11:17That Adad fled, he and certain Edomim of his father’s servants with him, to go into Mitzrayim (Egypt); Hadad being yet a little child.

11:18And they arose out of Midyan (Midian), and came to Paran: and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Mitzrayim, unto Par’oh king of Mitzrayim; which gave him a house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land.

11:19And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Par’oh, so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tachpenes (Tahpenes) the queen.

11:20And the sister of Tachpenes bore him Genuvat (Genubath) his son, whom Tachpenes weaned in Par’oh’s house: and Genuvat was in Par’oh’s household among the sons of Par’oh.

11:21And when Hadad heard in Mitzrayim that David slept with his fathers, and that Yo’av the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Par’oh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.”

11:22Then Par’oh said unto him, “But what have you lacked with me, that, behold, you seek to go to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing: howbeit let me go in any wise.”

Rezon of Damesek

11:23And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon the son of Elyada (Eliadah), which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Tzovah (Zobah):

11:24And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David slew them of Tzovah: and they went to Damesek (Damascus), and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damesek.

11:25And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Shlomo, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Aram (Syria).

Yarov’am and Achiyah’s prophecy

11:26And Yarov’am (Jeroboam) the son of Nevat (Nebat), an Efrati (Ephrathite) of Tzeredah (Zereda), Shlomo’s servant, whose mother’s name was Tzeru’ah (Zeruah), a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.

11:27And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Shlomo built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.

11:28And the man Yarov’am was a mighty man of valour: and Shlomo seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Yosef (Joseph).

11:29And it came to pass at that time when Yarov’am went out of Yerushalayim, that the prophet Achiyah (Ahijah) the Shiloni (Shilonite) found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:

11:30And Achiyah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:

11:31And he said to Yarov’am, “Take you ten pieces: for thus says Hashem, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Shlomo, and will give ten tribes to you:

11:32(But he shall have one tribe for My servant David’s sake, and for Yerushalayim’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)

11:33Because that they have forsaken Me, and have worshipped Ashtoret the goddess of the Tzidonim, Kemosh the god of Mo’av, and Milkom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways, to do that which is right in My eyes, and to keep My statutes and My judgments, as did David his father.

11:34Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David My servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept My commandments and My statutes:

11:35But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand, and will give it unto you, even ten tribes.

11:36And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David My servant may have a light always before Me in Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen Me to put My name there.

11:37And I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel.

11:38And it shall be, if you will hearken unto all that I command you, and will walk in My ways, and do that is right in My sight, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as David My servant did; that I will be with you, and build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto you.

11:39And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.’”

11:40Shlomo sought therefore to kill Yarov’am. And Yarov’am arose, and fled into Mitzrayim, unto Shishak king of Mitzrayim, and was in Mitzrayim until the death of Shlomo.

The death of Shlomo

11:41And the rest of the acts of Shlomo, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Shlomo?

11:42And the time that Shlomo reigned in Yerushalayim over all Israel was forty years.

11:43And Shlomo slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rechav’am (Rehoboam) his son reigned in his stead.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Kings they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 4–5 (4:21–34 there is 5:1–14 here), 18 and 20 (where a sentence is divided at a different place) and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
