Haftarah
On the eighth day of the consecration the glory of Hashem appears, fire comes out from before Him, and Nadav and Avihu die for offering “strange fire” (10:1–2). In the haftarah David brings the ark up to Yerushalayim with music and dancing, and Uzza dies for taking hold of the ark (6:7); then Hashem promises David a house whose throne will stand for ever (7:16). Chabad and other Ashkenazi communities read 2 Samuel 6:1–7:17; Sephardic communities end at 6:19, as marked below. On Shabbat Machar Chodesh, Shabbat Parah or Shabbat HaChodesh the special haftarah is read instead.
6:1Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Yisrael, thirty thousand.

6:2And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Ba’alei Yehudah (Baale of Judah), to bring up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of Hashem of hosts that dwells between the cherubim.

6:3And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Avinadav (Abinadab) that was in Giv’ah (Gibeah); and Uzza (Uzzah) and Achyo (Ahio), the sons of Avinadav, drove the new cart.

Haftarah: Machar Chodesh
Machar Chodesh (“Tomorrow is the new moon”) replaces the regular haftarah when Shabbat falls on the day before Rosh Chodesh. Shabbat Shemini is Erev Rosh Chodesh Iyar about one year in five (29 Nisan). The reading is Yehonatan’s words to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon” (1 Samuel 20:18).
20:18Then Yehonatan (Jonathan) said to David, “Tomorrow is the new moon (Rosh Chodesh); and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
Vayomer-lo Yehonatan maḥar ḥodesh venifkadta ki yipaked moshaveḥa.

Maftir: Shabbat Parah
Shabbat Parah is the Shabbat after Purim, read so that Yisrael may purify themselves before Pesach. In a leap year it is often Shabbat Shemini (in other years Tzav, Ki Tisa or Vayakhel). A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the law of the red heifer, whose ashes cleanse from the uncleanness of death.
19:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,
Vayedaber Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon lemor.

Haftarah: Shabbat Parah
Read on Shabbat Parah instead of 2 Samuel 6–7. As the water of the red heifer cleanses the unclean, Hashem promises: “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean” (36:25), and “a new heart also will I give you” (36:26). Sephardic communities end at verse 36; Ashkenazi communities, Chabad among them, read to verse 38.
36:16Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,
Vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor.

Maftir: Shabbat HaChodesh
Shabbat HaChodesh is the Shabbat on or before Rosh Chodesh Nisan. In a leap year it is often Shabbat Shemini (25 or 27 Adar II); in other years it is Vayikra, Pekudei or Vayakhel-Pekudei. A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months” (12:2), and the laws of the Pesach offering.
12:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and Aharon in the land of Mitzrayim, saying,
Vayomer Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon be'eretz Mitzrayim lemor.

Haftarah: Shabbat HaChodesh
Read on Shabbat HaChodesh instead of 2 Samuel 6–7. On the first day of the first month the sanctuary is cleansed (45:18), and on the fourteenth day “you shall have the Pesach” (45:21). Communities begin and end this haftarah at different verses, as marked below.
45:16“All the people of the land shall give this offering for the prince in Yisrael.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
