Holiday readings
Rosh Hashanah ראש השנה
“Head of the year” · Genesis 21–22; Numbers 29:1–6 · Haftarot: 1 Samuel 1:1–2:10; Jeremiah 31:2–20
First Day
1 Tishrei. Two Torah scrolls are taken out. From the first, five aliyot read the birth of Yitzchak (Isaac), “And Hashem visited Sarah as He had said” (21:1), the Sages taught that Sarah, Rachel and Channah (Hannah) were all remembered on Rosh Hashanah. On Shabbat seven aliyot are called: 21:1–4, 21:5–8, 21:9–12, 21:13–17, 21:18–21, 21:22–27 and 21:28–34. From the second scroll the Maftir reads the offerings of “the seventh month, on the first day of the month” (29:1), “a day of blowing the shofar” (teruah). The shofar is not blown when the first day falls on Shabbat.
21:1And Hashem remembered Sarah as He had said, and Hashem did unto Sarah as He had spoken.
21:1Y visitó Hashem a Sará, como había dicho, e hizo Hashem con Sará como había hablado.

21:14Entonces Avraham se levantó muy de mañana, y tomó pan y un odre de agua, y se lo dio a Hagar, poniéndolo sobre su hombro, y le entregó el muchacho, y la despidió. Y ella partió, y andaba errante por el desierto de Be’er-Sheva (Beerseba).

Haftarah: First Day
Channah prays for a child at Shiloh and is remembered by Hashem, as Sarah was in the Torah reading; Shmuel (Samuel) is born (1:20). Her song ends, “Hashem shall judge the ends of the earth … and exalt the horn of His anointed” (2:10), the first time the Scriptures speak of an anointed king (mashiach).
1:1Now there was a certain man of Ramatayim-Tzofim (Ramathaim-zophim), of mount Efrayim (Ephraim), and his name was Elkanah, the son of Yerocham (Jeroham), the son of Elihu, the son of Tochu (Tohu), the son of Tzuf (Zuph), an Efrati (Ephrathite).

1:2And he had two wives; the name of the one was Channah (Hannah), and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Channah had no children.

1:3And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto Hashem of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Chofni (Hophni) and Pinchas (Phinehas), the priests of Hashem, were there.

2 Tishrei. The Akedah, the binding of Yitzchak, read in five aliyot: “God will provide Himself a lamb” (22:8). The ram caught by its horns (22:13) is remembered in the shofar. The Maftir is again Numbers 29:1–6 (29:1–6).
22:1And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Avraham, and said unto him, “Avraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

“Is Efrayim (Ephraim) My dear son? … I do earnestly remember him still” (31:20). Rachel weeping for her children is told, “there is hope for your future” (31:15–17). Verse numbers follow the Westminster Leningrad Codex and most English Bibles; some Hebrew editions number these verses 31:1–19.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim). The readings from Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus are as published on Chabad.org (checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh); the readings from Numbers and Deuteronomy and the haftarot are from the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Aliyot, Maftir and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, checked against Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown. The Torah text is the same as on the weekly Torah portion pages.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
