Text (469) 608-9944Zephaniah, Chapter 2
The meek of the earth are called to seek Hashem before the day of His anger; judgment is pronounced on Azzah, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Ekron and the land of the Pelishtim, on Mo’av and Ammon for their reproach, on the Kushim, and on Ashur and Ninveh, the rejoicing city made a desolation.
2:1Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;
2:2Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Hashem come upon you, before the day of Hashem’s anger come upon you.
2:3Seek you Hashem, all you meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be you shall be hid in the day of Hashem’s anger.
2:4For Azzah (Gaza) shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noonday, and Ekron shall be rooted up.
2:5Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Kereti (Cherethites)! the word of Hashem is against you; O Kena’an (Canaan), the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines), I will even destroy you, that there shall be no inhabitant.
2:6And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.
2:7And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Yehudah (Judah); they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for Hashem their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.
2:8I have heard the reproach of Mo’av (Moab), and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached My people, and magnified themselves against their border.
2:9Therefore as I live, says Hashem of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Mo’av shall be as Sedom (Sodom), and the children of Ammon as Amorah (Gomorrah), even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of My people shall spoil them, and the remnant of My people shall possess them.
2:10This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Hashem of hosts.
2:11Hashem will be terrible unto them: for He will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship Him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.
2:12You Kushim (Ethiopians) also, you shall be slain by My sword.
2:13And He will stretch out His hand against the north, and destroy Ashur (Assyria); and will make Ninveh (Nineveh) a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.
2:14And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.
2:15This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is none beside me:” how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Zephaniah they are the same as in most English Bibles.
