Text (469) 608-9944Zechariah, Chapter 7
In the fourth year of Daryavesh, men are sent to ask whether they should still weep in the fifth month; Hashem asks whether their fasts were kept for Him, calls them to execute true judgment and show mercy, and recalls how their fathers refused to hear and were scattered among the nations.
7:1And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Daryavesh (Darius), that the word of Hashem came unto Zecharyah (Zechariah) in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Kislev (Chisleu);
אוַֽיְהִי֙ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת אַרְבַּ֔ע לְדָרְיָ֖וֶשׁ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ הָיָ֨ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־זְכַרְיָ֗ה בְּאַרְבָּעָ֛ה לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַתְּשִׁעִ֖י בְּכִסְלֵֽו׃
7:2When they had sent unto the house of God Sar’etzer (Sherezer) and Regem Melech (Regem-melech), and their men, to pray before Hashem,
בוַיִּשְׁלַח֙ בֵּֽית־אֵ֔ל שַׂר־אֶ֕צֶר וְרֶ֥גֶם מֶ֖לֶךְ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֑יו לְחַלּ֖וֹת אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
7:3And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of Hashem of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?”
7:4Then came the word of Hashem of hosts unto me, saying,
דוַיְהִ֛י דְּבַר־יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃
7:5“Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did you at all fast unto Me, even to Me?
7:6And when you did eat, and when you did drink, did not you eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?
ווְכִ֥י תֹאכְל֖וּ וְכִ֣י תִשְׁתּ֑וּ הֲל֤וֹא אַתֶּם֙ הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים וְאַתֶּ֖ם הַשֹּׁתִֽים׃
7:7Should you not hear the words which Hashem has cried by the former prophets, when Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?’”
7:8And the word of Hashem came unto Zecharyah, saying,
חוַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־זְכַרְיָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃
7:9“Thus speaks Hashem of hosts, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
טכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֵאמֹ֑ר מִשְׁפַּ֤ט אֱמֶת֙ שְׁפֹ֔טוּ וְחֶ֣סֶד וְרַֽחֲמִ֔ים עֲשׂ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ אֶת־אָחִֽיו׃
7:10And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.’
יוְאַלְמָנָ֧ה וְיָת֛וֹם גֵּ֥ר וְעָנִ֖י אַֽל־תַּעֲשֹׁ֑קוּ וְרָעַת֙ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֔יו אַֽל־תַּחְשְׁב֖וּ בִּלְבַבְכֶֽם׃
7:11But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
יאוַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ לְהַקְשִׁ֔יב וַיִּתְּנ֥וּ כָתֵ֖ף סֹרָ֑רֶת וְאָזְנֵיהֶ֖ם הִכְבִּ֥ידוּ מִשְּׁמֽוֹעַ׃
7:12Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the Torah, and the words which Hashem of hosts has sent in His spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from Hashem of hosts.
7:13Therefore it is come to pass, that as He cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, says Hashem of hosts:
יגוַיְהִ֥י כַאֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֖א וְלֹ֣א שָׁמֵ֑עוּ כֵּ֤ן יִקְרְאוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶשְׁמָ֔ע אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃
7:14But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Zechariah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1 and 2; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
