Text (469) 608-9944Zechariah, Chapter 2
Zecharyah sees four horns that scattered Yehudah and four carpenters come to cast them down, then a man with a measuring line; Yerushalayim shall be inhabited without walls, the exiles are called out of Bavel, and Hashem will dwell in the midst of Tziyon with many nations joined to Him.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–4 here are 1:18–21 in most English Bibles. Verses 5–17 here are 2:1–13 in most English Bibles.
2:1Then lifted I up my eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.
2:2And I said unto the angel that talked with me, “What be these?” And he answered me, “These are the horns which have scattered Yehudah (Judah), Israel, and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).”
2:3And Hashem showed me four carpenters.
2:4Then said I, “What come these to do?” And he spoke, saying, “These are the horns which have scattered Yehudah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Yehudah to scatter it.”
2:5I lifted up my eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.
2:6Then said I, “Whither go you?” And he said unto me, “To measure Yerushalayim, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.”
2:7And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,
2:8And said unto him, “Run, speak to this young man, saying, ‘Yerushalayim shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:
2:9For I, says Hashem, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.’”
2:10Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, says Hashem: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, says Hashem.
2:11Deliver yourself, O Tziyon (Zion), that dwell with the daughter of Bavel (Babylon).
2:12For thus says Hashem of hosts; “After the glory has He sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that touches you touches the apple of his eye.
2:13For, behold, I will shake my hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and you shall know that Hashem of hosts has sent me.”
2:14Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Tziyon: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of you, says Hashem.
2:15And many nations shall be joined to Hashem in that day, and shall be My people: and I will dwell in the midst of you, and you shall know that Hashem of hosts has sent me unto you.
2:16And Hashem shall inherit Yehudah His portion in the holy land, and shall choose Yerushalayim again.
2:17Be silent, O all flesh, before Hashem: for He is raised up out of His holy habitation.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Zechariah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1 and 2; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
