Text (469) 608-9944Song of Songs, Chapter 6
The bride tells where her beloved has gone down into his garden; he praises her as beautiful as Tirtzah and comely as Yerushalayim, his dove, his undefiled, who is but one above the queens and concubines; and he goes down to the garden of nuts.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 6:13 of most English Bibles is 7:1 here.
6:1Whither is your beloved gone, O you fairest among women? whither is your beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with you.
6:2My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
6:3I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feeds among the lilies.
6:4You are beautiful, O my love, as Tirtzah (Tirzah), comely as Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), terrible as an army with banners.
6:5Turn away your eyes from me, for they have overcome me: your hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gil’ad (Gilead).
6:6Your teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one bears twins, and there is not one barren among them.
6:7As a piece of a pomegranate are your temples within your locks.
6:8There are sixty queens, and eighty concubines, and virgins without number.
6:9My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bore her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
6:10Who is she that looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
6:11I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.
6:12Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Ammi-Nadiv (Amminadib).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Song of Songs they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 6 and 7; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
