Text (469) 608-9944Ruth, Chapter 4
At the gate the nearer kinsman gives up his right and draws off his shoe; Boaz buys all that was Elimelech’s and takes Rut to wife before the elders, she bears Oved, the father of Yishai, the father of David, and the generations of Peretz are given down to David.
4:1Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by; unto whom he said, “Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here.” And he turned aside, and sat down.
4:2And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit you down here.” And they sat down.
4:3And he said unto the kinsman, “Na’omi (Naomi), that is come again out of the country of Mo’av (Moab), sells a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s:
4:4And I thought to advertise you, saying, ‘Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it: but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside you; and I am after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.”
4:5Then said Boaz, “What day you buy the field of the hand of Na’omi, you must buy it also of Rut the Mo’aviyah (Ruth the Moabitess), the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.”
4:6And the kinsman said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance: redeem you my right to yourself; for I cannot redeem it.”
4:7Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
4:8Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, “Buy it for you.” So he drew off his shoe.
4:9And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, “You are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Kilyon’s (Chilion’s) and Machlon’s (Mahlon’s), of the hand of Na’omi.
4:10Moreover Rut the Mo’aviyah, the wife of Machlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: you are witnesses this day.”
4:11And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. Hashem make the woman that is come into your house like Rachel and like Le’ah (Leah), which two did build the house of Israel: and do you worthily in Efratah (Ephratah), and be famous in Beit Lechem (Bethlehem):
4:12And let your house be like the house of Peretz (Pharez), whom Tamar bore unto Yehudah (Judah), of the seed which Hashem shall give you of this young woman.”
4:13So Boaz took Rut, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, Hashem gave her conception, and she bore a son.
4:14And the women said unto Na’omi, “Blessed be Hashem, which has not left you this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
4:15And he shall be unto you a restorer of your life, and a nourisher of your old age: for your daughter in law, which loves you, which is better to you than seven sons, has born him.”
4:16And Na’omi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
4:17And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, “There is a son born to Na’omi”; and they called his name Oved (Obed): he is the father of Yishai (Jesse), the father of David.
4:18Now these are the generations of Peretz: Peretz begat Chetzron (Hezron),
4:19And Chetzron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadav (Amminadab),
4:20And Amminadav begat Nachshon (Nahshon), and Nachshon begat Salmah (Salmon),
4:21And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Oved,
4:22And Oved begat Yishai, and Yishai begat David.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Ruth they are the same as in most English Bibles.
