Ruth, Chapter 2

Rut gleans in the field of Boaz, a kinsman of Elimelech; Boaz hears of her kindness to Na’omi, blesses her by Hashem God of Israel and provides for her, and Na’omi tells Rut that he is one of their next kinsmen.

2:1And Na’omi (Naomi) had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.

Rut gleans in the field

2:2And Rut the Mo’aviyah (Ruth the Moabitess) said unto Na’omi, “Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find grace.” And she said unto her, “Go, my daughter.”

2:3And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

2:4And behold, Boaz came from Beit Lechem (Bethlehem), and said unto the reapers, “Hashem be with you.” And they answered him, “Hashem bless you.”

2:5Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, “Whose damsel is this?”

2:6And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, “It is the Mo’aviyah damsel that came back with Na’omi out of the country of Mo’av (Moab):

2:7And she said, ‘I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves’: so she came, and has continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.”

Boaz’s kindness to Rut

2:8Then said Boaz unto Rut, “Hear you not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:

2:9Let your eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go you after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch you? and when you are athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.”

2:10Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, “Why have I found grace in your eyes, that you should take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?”

2:11And Boaz answered and said unto her, “It has fully been shown me, all that you have done unto your mother in law since the death of your husband: and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your nativity, and are come unto a people which you knew not heretofore.

2:12Hashem recompense your work, and a full reward be given you of Hashem God of Israel, under whose wings you are come to trust.”

2:13Then she said, “Let me find favour in your sight, my lord; for that you have comforted me, and for that you have spoken friendly unto your handmaid, though I be not like unto one of your handmaidens.”

2:14And Boaz said unto her, “At mealtime come you hither, and eat of the bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar.” And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched grain, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.

2:15And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not:

2:16And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.”

2:17So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley.

Rut tells Na’omi

2:18And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.

2:19And her mother in law said unto her, “Where have you gleaned today? and where wrought you? blessed be he that did take knowledge of you.” And she showed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, “The man’s name with whom I wrought today is Boaz.”

2:20And Na’omi said unto her daughter in law, “Blessed be he of Hashem, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead.” And Na’omi said unto her, “The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.”

2:21And Rut the Mo’aviyah said, “He said unto me also, ‘You shall keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.’”

2:22And Na’omi said unto Rut her daughter in law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his maidens, that they meet you not in any other field.”

2:23So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Ruth they are the same as in most English Bibles.
