Psalm 97

A psalm of Hashem’s reign: clouds and darkness surround Him, the hills melt before Him, those who serve graven images are confounded, Tziyon rejoices in His judgments, and light is sown for the righteous.

97:1Hashem reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

97:2Clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of His throne.

97:3A fire goes before Him, and burns up His enemies round about.

97:4His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

97:5The hills melted like wax at the presence of Hashem, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

97:6The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the people see His glory.

97:7Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship Him, all you gods.

97:8Tziyon (Zion) heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Yehudah (Judah) rejoiced because of Your judgments, O Hashem.

97:9For You, Hashem, are high above all the earth: You are exalted far above all gods.

97:10You that love Hashem, hate evil: He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

97:11Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

97:12Rejoice in Hashem, you righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
Quiz
