Psalm 83

Asaf’s prayer that God not keep silence while Edom, Mo’av, Ammon, Amalek, Ashur and others consult together to cut off Israel, asking Him to deal with them as with Sisera and Yavin.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

83:1A Song or Psalm of Asaf (Asaph).

83:2Keep not You silence, O God: hold not Your peace, and be not still, O God.

83:3For, lo, Your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate You have lifted up the head.

83:4They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted against Your hidden ones.

83:5They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.”

83:6For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against You:

83:7The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelim (Ishmaelites); of Mo’av (Moab), and the Hagrim (Hagarenes);

83:8Geval (Gebal), and Ammon, and Amalek; the Pelishtim (Philistines) with the inhabitants of Tzor (Tyre);

83:9Ashur (Assyria) also is joined with them: they have helped the children of Lot. Selah.

83:10Do unto them as unto the Midyanim (Midianites); as to Sisera, as to Yavin (Jabin), at the brook of Kishon (Kison):

83:11Which perished at Ein Dor (Endor): they became as dung for the earth.

83:12Make their nobles like Orev (Oreb), and like Ze’ev (Zeeb): yea, all their princes as Zevach (Zebah), and as Tzalmuna (Zalmunna):

83:13Who said, “Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.”

83:14O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.

83:15As the fire burns a wood, and as the flame sets the mountains on fire;

83:16So persecute them with Your tempest, and make them afraid with Your storm.

83:17Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek Your name, O Hashem.

83:18Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:

83:19That men may know that You, whose name alone is Hashem, are the Most High over all the earth.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
