Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 57
David’s Mikhtam from when he fled from Shaul in the cave: lying among lions, he takes refuge in the shadow of God’s wings, and his heart is fixed to sing God’s praise.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
57:1To the chief Musician, Al Tashchet, Mikhtam of David, when he fled from Shaul (Saul) in the cave.
57:2Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusts in You: yea, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
57:3I will cry unto God Most High; unto God that performs all things for me.
57:4He shall send from heaven, and save from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.
57:5My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
57:6Be You exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be above all the earth.
57:7They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.
57:8My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
57:9Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
57:10I will praise You, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto You among the nations.
57:11For Your mercy is great unto the heavens, and Your truth unto the clouds.
57:12Be You exalted, O God, above the heavens: let Your glory be above all the earth.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
