Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 44
A Maskil for the sons of Korach recalling how God gave the fathers the land, lamenting that He has cast off His people though they have not forgotten Him, and asking Him to arise.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
44:1To the chief Musician for the sons of Korach (Korah), Maskil.
44:2We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work You did in their days, in the times of old.
44:3How You did drive out the heathen with Your hand, and planted them; how You did afflict the people, and cast them out.
44:4For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but Your right hand, and Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, because You had a favour unto them.
44:5You are my King, O God: command deliverances for Ya’akov (Jacob).
44:6Through You will we push down our enemies: through Your name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
44:7For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
44:8But You have saved us from our enemies, and have put them to shame that hated us.
44:9In God we boast all the day long, and praise Your name for ever. Selah.
44:10But You have cast off, and put us to shame; and go not forth with our armies.
44:11You make us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
44:12You have given us like sheep appointed for food; and have scattered us among the heathen.
44:13You sell Your people for nought, and do not increase Your wealth by their price.
44:14You make us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
44:15You make us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
44:16My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face has covered me,
44:17For the voice of him that reproaches and blasphemes; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
44:18All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten You, neither have we dealt falsely in Your covenant.
44:19Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from Your way;
44:20Though You have greatly broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.
44:21If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
44:22Shall not God search this out? for He knows the secrets of the heart.
44:23Yea, for Your sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
44:24Awake, why sleep You, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
44:25Why hide You Your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?
44:26For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaves unto the earth.
44:27Arise for our help, and redeem us for Your mercies’ sake.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
