Psalm 21

David’s psalm of the king rejoicing in Hashem’s strength, who has given him his heart’s desire, length of days, and glory, and who will find out and destroy His enemies.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

21:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

21:2The king shall joy in Your strength, O Hashem; and in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!

21:3You have given him his heart’s desire, and have not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.

21:4For You go before him with the blessings of goodness: You set a crown of pure gold on his head.

21:5He asked life of You, and You gave it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

21:6His glory is great in Your salvation: honour and majesty have You laid upon him.

21:7For You have made him most blessed for ever: You have made him exceeding glad with Your countenance.

21:8For the king trusts in Hashem, and through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.

21:9Your hand shall find out all Your enemies: Your right hand shall find out those that hate You.

21:10You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger: Hashem shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

21:11Their fruit shall You destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.

21:12For they intended evil against You: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.

21:13Therefore shall You make them turn their back, when You shall make ready Your arrows upon Your strings against the face of them.

21:14Be You exalted, Hashem, in Your own strength: so will we sing and praise Your power.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
