Psalm 18

David’s song on the day Hashem delivered him from all his enemies and from Shaul: Hashem his rock came down in thunder and fire, drew him out of many waters, and gave him victory.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

18:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of Hashem, who spoke unto Hashem the words of this song in the day that Hashem delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Shaul (Saul): And he said,

18:2I will love You, O Hashem, my strength.

18:3Hashem is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

18:4I will call upon Hashem, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies.

18:5The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

18:6The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death met me.

18:7In my distress I called upon Hashem, and cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears.

18:8Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because He was wroth.

18:9There went up a smoke out of His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

18:10He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under His feet.

18:11And He rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, He did fly upon the wings of the wind.

18:12He made darkness His secret place; His pavilion round about Him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

18:13At the brightness that was before Him His thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

18:14Hashem also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High gave His voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

18:15Yea, He sent out His arrows, and scattered them; and He shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

18:16Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at Your rebuke, O Hashem, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.

18:17He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of many waters.

18:18He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

18:19They met me in the day of my calamity: but Hashem was my stay.

18:20He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because He delighted in me.

18:21Hashem rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands has He recompensed me.

18:22For I have kept the ways of Hashem, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

18:23For all His judgments were before me, and I did not put away His statutes from me.

18:24I was also upright before Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

18:25Therefore has Hashem recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His eyesight.

18:26With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; with an upright man You will show Yourself upright;

18:27With the pure You will show Yourself pure; and with the froward You will show Yourself froward.

18:28For You will save the afflicted people; but will bring down high looks.

18:29For You will light my candle: Hashem my God will enlighten my darkness.

18:30For by You I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

18:31As for God, His way is perfect: the word of Hashem is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.

18:32For who is God save Hashem? or who is a rock save our God?

18:33It is God that girds me with strength, and makes my way perfect.

18:34He makes my feet like does’ feet, and sets me upon my high places.

18:35He teaches my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by my arms.

18:36You have also given me the shield of Your salvation: and Your right hand has holden me up, and Your gentleness has made me great.

18:37You have enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.

18:38I have pursued my enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

18:39I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.

18:40For You have girded me with strength unto the battle: You have subdued under me those that rose up against me.

18:41You have also given me the necks of my enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.

18:42They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto Hashem, but He answered them not.

18:43Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.

18:44You have delivered me from the strivings of the people; and You have made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.

18:45As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.

18:46The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.

18:47Hashem lives; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

18:48It is God that avenges me, and subdues the people under me.

18:49He delivers me from my enemies: yea, You lift me up above those that rise up against me: You have delivered me from the violent man.

18:50Therefore will I give thanks unto You, O Hashem, among the heathen, and sing praises unto Your name.

18:51Great deliverance gives He to His king; and shows mercy to His anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
