Psalm 132

A Song of Ascents recalling David’s vow to find a place for Hashem, and Hashem’s oath to set David’s descendants upon his throne and to dwell for ever in Tziyon, which He has chosen.

132:1A Song of Ascents. Hashem, remember David, and all his afflictions:

132:2How he swore unto Hashem, and vowed unto the mighty God of Ya’akov (Jacob);

132:3“Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

132:4I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,

132:5Until I find out a place for Hashem, an habitation for the mighty God of Ya’akov.”

132:6Lo, we heard of it at Efrata (Ephratah): we found it in the fields of the wood.

132:7We will go into His tabernacles: we will worship at His footstool.

132:8Arise, O Hashem, into Your rest; You, and the ark of Your strength.

132:9Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness; and let Your saints shout for joy.

132:10For Your servant David’s sake turn not away the face of Your anointed.

132:11Hashem has sworn in truth unto David; He will not turn from it; “Of the fruit of your body will I set upon your throne.

132:12If your children will keep My covenant and My testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon your throne for evermore.”

132:13For Hashem has chosen Tziyon (Zion); He has desired it for His habitation.

132:14“This is My rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

132:15I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

132:16I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

132:17There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for My anointed.

132:18His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
