Psalm 116

A psalm of love for Hashem, who heard the psalmist’s voice when the sorrows of death compassed him; he will take the cup of salvation and pay his vows in Yerushalayim.

116:1I love Hashem, because He has heard my voice and my supplications.

116:2Because He has inclined His ear unto me, therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live.

116:3The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

116:4Then called I upon the name of Hashem; “O Hashem, I beseech You, deliver my soul.”

116:5Gracious is Hashem, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

116:6Hashem preserves the simple: I was brought low, and He helped me.

116:7Return unto your rest, O my soul; for Hashem has dealt bountifully with you.

116:8For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

116:9I will walk before Hashem in the land of the living.

116:10I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:

116:11I said in my haste, “All men are liars.”

116:12What shall I render unto Hashem for all His benefits toward me?

116:13I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of Hashem.

116:14I will pay my vows unto Hashem now in the presence of all His people.

116:15Precious in the sight of Hashem is the death of His saints.

116:16O Hashem, truly I am Your servant; I am Your servant, and the son of Your handmaid: You have loosed my bonds.

116:17I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of Hashem.

116:18I will pay my vows unto Hashem now in the presence of all His people,

116:19In the courts of Hashem’s house, in the midst of you, O Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). Hallelujah.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
