Proverbs, Chapter 5

A son is warned against the strange woman, whose lips drop honey but whose end is bitter and whose steps lead to death, lest he mourn at the last; he is told to rejoice with the wife of his youth, for Hashem ponders all a man’s ways.

The lips of a strange woman

5:1My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding:

5:2That you may regard discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge.

5:3For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

5:4But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

5:5Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

5:6Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that you can not know them.

Remove your way far from her

5:7Hear me now therefore, O you children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

5:8Remove your way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

5:9Lest you give your honour unto others, and your years unto the cruel:

5:10Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labours be in the house of a stranger;

5:11And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

5:12And say, “How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

5:13And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!

5:14I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.”

The wife of your youth

5:15Drink waters out of your own cistern, and running waters out of your own well.

5:16Let your fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

5:17Let them be only your own, and not strangers’ with you.

5:18Let your fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of your youth.

5:19Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and be you ravished always with her love.

5:20And why will you, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

5:21For the ways of man are before the eyes of Hashem, and He ponders all his goings.

5:22His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

5:23He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
