Proverbs, Chapter 22

משלי כב

More proverbs of Shlomo on a good name, the rich and the poor, training up a child and the slothful man, followed by the words of the wise: warnings against robbing the poor, friendship with an angry man, becoming surety for debts and removing the ancient landmark.

22:1A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

אנִבְחָ֣ר שֵׁ֭ם מֵעֹ֣שֶׁר רָ֑ב מִכֶּ֥סֶף וּ֝מִזָּהָ֗ב חֵ֣ן טֽוֹב׃

22:2The rich and poor meet together: Hashem is the maker of them all.

בעָשִׁ֣יר וָרָ֣שׁ נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ עֹשֵׂ֖ה כֻלָּ֣ם יְהוָֽה׃

22:3A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

געָר֤וּם ׀ רָאָ֣ה רָעָ֣ה וְנִסְתָּ֑ר (כתיב ויסתר) וּ֝פְתָיִ֗ים עָבְר֥וּ וְֽנֶעֱנָֽשׁוּ׃

22:4By humility and the fear of Hashem are riches, and honour, and life.

דעֵ֣קֶב עֲ֭נָוָה יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֖שֶׁר וְכָב֣וֹד וְחַיִּֽים׃

22:5Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that does keep his soul shall be far from them.

הצִנִּ֣ים פַּ֭חִים בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ עִקֵּ֑שׁ שׁוֹמֵ֥ר נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ יִרְחַ֥ק מֵהֶֽם׃

22:6Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

וחֲנֹ֣ךְ לַ֭נַּעַר עַל־פִּ֣י דַרְכּ֑וֹ גַּ֥ם כִּֽי־יַ֝זְקִ֗ין לֹֽא־יָס֥וּר מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

22:7The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

זעָ֭שִׁיר בְּרָשִׁ֣ים יִמְשׁ֑וֹל וְעֶ֥בֶד לֹ֝וֶ֗ה לְאִ֣ישׁ מַלְוֶֽה׃

22:8He that sows iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

חזוֹרֵ֣עַ עַ֭וְלָה יִקְצָר (כתיב יקצור)־אָ֑וֶן וְשֵׁ֖בֶט עֶבְרָת֣וֹ יִכְלֶֽה׃

22:9He that has a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he gives of his bread to the poor.

טטֽוֹב־עַ֭יִן ה֣וּא יְבֹרָ֑ךְ כִּֽי־נָתַ֖ן מִלַּחְמ֣וֹ לַדָּֽל׃

22:10Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

יגָּ֣רֵֽשׁ לֵ֭ץ וְיֵצֵ֣א מָד֑וֹן וְ֝יִשְׁבֹּ֗ת דִּ֣ין וְקָלֽוֹן׃

22:11He that loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

יאאֹהֵ֥ב טְהָר (כתיב טהור)־לֵ֑ב חֵ֥ן שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו רֵעֵ֥הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ׃

22:12The eyes of Hashem preserve knowledge, and He overthrows the words of the transgressor.

יבעֵינֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה נָ֣צְרוּ דָ֑עַת וַ֝יְסַלֵּ֗ף דִּבְרֵ֥י בֹגֵֽד׃

22:13The slothful man says, “There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.”

יגאָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל אֲרִ֣י בַח֑וּץ בְּת֥וֹךְ רְ֝חֹב֗וֹת אֵֽרָצֵֽחַ׃

22:14The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of Hashem shall fall therein.

ידשׁוּחָ֣ה עֲ֭מֻקָּה פִּ֣י זָר֑וֹת זְע֥וּם יְ֝הוָ֗ה יִפָּל (כתיב יפול)־שָֽׁם׃

22:15Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

טואִ֭וֶּלֶת קְשׁוּרָ֣ה בְלֶב־נָ֑עַר שֵׁ֥בֶט מ֝וּסָ֗ר יַרְחִיקֶ֥נָּה מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

22:16He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches, and he that gives to the rich, shall surely come to want.

טזעֹ֣שֵֽׁק דָּ֭ל לְהַרְבּ֣וֹת ל֑וֹ נֹתֵ֥ן לְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר אַךְ־לְמַחְסֽוֹר׃

The words of the wise

22:17Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto my knowledge.

יזהַ֥ט אָזְנְךָ֗ וּ֭שְׁמַע דִּבְרֵ֣י חֲכָמִ֑ים וְ֝לִבְּךָ֗ תָּשִׁ֥ית לְדַעְתִּֽי׃

22:18For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; they shall withal be fitted in your lips.

יחכִּֽי־נָ֭עִים כִּֽי־תִשְׁמְרֵ֣ם בְּבִטְנֶ֑ךָ יִכֹּ֥נוּ יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו עַל־שְׂפָתֶֽיךָ׃

22:19That your trust may be in Hashem, I have made known to you this day, even to you.

יטלִהְי֣וֹת בַּ֭יהוָה מִבְטַחֶ֑ךָ הוֹדַעְתִּ֖יךָ הַיּ֣וֹם אַף־אָֽתָּה׃

22:20Have not I written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

כהֲלֹ֤א כָתַ֣בְתִּי לְ֭ךָ שָׁלִישִׁ֑ים (כתיב שלשום) בְּמ֖וֹעֵצֹ֣ת וָדָֽעַת׃

22:21That I might make you know the certainty of the words of truth; that you might answer the words of truth to them that send unto you?

כאלְהוֹדִֽיעֲךָ֗ קֹ֭שְׁטְ אִמְרֵ֣י אֱמֶ֑ת לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֲמָרִ֥ים אֱ֝מֶ֗ת לְשֹׁלְחֶֽיךָ׃

Rob not the poor

22:22Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

כבאַֽל־תִּגְזָל־דָּ֭ל כִּ֣י דַל־ה֑וּא וְאַל־תְּדַכֵּ֖א עָנִ֣י בַשָּֽׁעַר׃

22:23For Hashem will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

כגכִּֽי־יְ֭הוָה יָרִ֣יב רִיבָ֑ם וְקָבַ֖ע אֶת־קֹבְעֵיהֶ֣ם נָֽפֶשׁ׃

22:24Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man you shall not go:

כדאַל־תִּ֭תְרַע אֶת־בַּ֣עַל אָ֑ף וְאֶת־אִ֥ישׁ חֵ֝מוֹת לֹ֣א תָבֽוֹא׃

22:25Lest you learn his ways, and get a snare to your soul.

כהפֶּן־תֶּאֱלַ֥ף אֹֽרְחֹתָ֑יו (כתיב ארחתו) וְלָקַחְתָּ֖ מוֹקֵ֣שׁ לְנַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

Sureties and landmarks

22:26Be not you one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

כואַל־תְּהִ֥י בְתֹֽקְעֵי־כָ֑ף בַּ֝עֹרְבִ֗ים מַשָּׁאֽוֹת׃

22:27If you have nothing to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?

כזאִם־אֵֽין־לְךָ֥ לְשַׁלֵּ֑ם לָ֥מָּה יִקַּ֥ח מִ֝שְׁכָּבְךָ֗ מִתַּחְתֶּֽיךָ׃

22:28Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.

כחאַל־תַּ֭סֵּג גְּב֣וּל עוֹלָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עָשׂ֣וּ אֲבוֹתֶֽיךָ׃

22:29See you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

כטחָזִ֡יתָ אִ֤ישׁ ׀ מָ֘הִ֤יר בִּמְלַאכְתּ֗וֹ לִֽפְנֵֽי־מְלָכִ֥ים יִתְיַצָּ֑ב בַּל־יִ֝תְיַצֵּב לִפְנֵ֥י חֲשֻׁכִּֽים׃

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
