Text (469) 608-9944Proverbs, Chapter 14
Proverbs of the wise woman who builds her house, the way that seems right unto a man, the simple and the prudent, the fear of Hashem as a fountain of life, the oppressor of the poor, and righteousness that exalts a nation.
14:1Every wise woman builds her house: but the foolish plucks it down with her hands.
14:2He that walks in his uprightness fears Hashem: but he that is perverse in his ways despises Him.
14:3In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
14:4Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
14:5A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
14:6A scorner seeks wisdom, and finds it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understands.
14:7Go from the presence of a foolish man, when you perceive not in him the lips of knowledge.
14:8The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
14:9Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.
14:10The heart knows his own bitterness; and a stranger does not intermeddle with his joy.
14:11The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
14:12There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
14:13Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
14:14The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.
14:15The simple believes every word: but the prudent man looks well to his going.
14:16A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.
14:17He that is soon angry deals foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
14:18The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
14:19The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
14:20The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich has many friends.
14:21He that despises his neighbour sins: but he that has mercy on the humble, happy is he.
14:22Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.
14:23In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tends only to penury.
14:24The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.
14:25A true witness delivers souls: but a deceitful witness speaks lies.
14:26In the fear of Hashem is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
14:27The fear of Hashem is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
14:28In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
14:29He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.
14:30A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
14:31He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker: but he that honours Him has mercy on the poor.
14:32The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.
14:33Wisdom rests in the heart of him that has understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.
14:34Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
14:35The king’s favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causes shame.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
