Proverbs, Chapter 10

The proverbs of Shlomo begin: the wise son and the foolish, the diligent hand and the slack, the mouth and lips of the righteous against those of the wicked, and the fear of Hashem that prolongs days.

The proverbs of Shlomo

10:1The proverbs of Shlomo (Solomon). A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

10:2Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivers from death.

10:3Hashem will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but He casts away the substance of the wicked.

10:4He becomes poor that deals with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

10:5He that gathers in summer is a wise son: but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

10:6Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

10:7The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

10:8The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

10:9He that walks uprightly walks surely: but he that perverts his ways shall be known.

10:10He that winks with the eye causes sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

The mouth of the righteous

10:11The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

10:12Hatred stirs up strifes: but love covers all sins.

10:13In the lips of him that has understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

10:14Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

10:15The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

10:16The labour of the righteous tends to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

10:17He is in the way of life that keeps instruction: but he that refuses reproof errs.

10:18He that hides hatred with lying lips, and he that utters a slander, is a fool.

10:19In the multitude of words there wants not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

10:20The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

10:21The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

The blessing of Hashem

10:22The blessing of Hashem, it makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.

10:23It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding has wisdom.

10:24The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

10:25As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

10:26As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

10:27The fear of Hashem prolongs days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

10:28The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

10:29The way of Hashem is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

10:30The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

10:31The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

10:32The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaks frowardness.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
