Numbers, Chapter 3

The sons of Aharon are named; Hashem gives the Levi’im to Aharon in place of the firstborn of Yisrael; the families of Gershon, Kehat and Merari are numbered from a month old with their camps and charges, and the firstborn beyond the number of the Levi’im are redeemed for five shekels apiece.

The sons of Aharon

3:1These also are the generations of Aharon (Aaron) and Moshe (Moses) in the day that Hashem spoke with Moshe in mount Sinai.

3:2And these are the names of the sons of Aharon: Nadav (Nadab) the firstborn, and Avihu (Abihu), Elazar (Eleazar), and Itamar (Ithamar).

3:3These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

3:4And Nadav and Avihu died before Hashem, when they offered strange fire before Hashem, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Elazar and Itamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aharon their father.

The Levi’im given to Aharon

3:5And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

3:6“Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aharon the priest, that they may minister unto him.

3:7And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle.

3:8And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Yisrael (Israel), to do the service of the tabernacle.

3:9And you shall give the Levi’im (Levites) unto Aharon and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Yisrael.

3:10And you shall appoint Aharon and his sons, and they shall attend to their priest’s office; and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.”

3:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

3:12“And I, behold, I have taken the Levi’im from among the children of Yisrael instead of all the firstborn that opens the womb among the children of Yisrael; therefore the Levi’im shall be Mine,

3:13because all the firstborn are Mine; for on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) I hallowed unto Me all the firstborn in Yisrael, both man and beast: Mine they shall be. I am Hashem.”

The census of the Levi’im

3:14And Hashem spoke unto Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,

3:15“Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shall you number.”

3:16And Moshe numbered them according to the word of Hashem, as he was commanded.

3:48And you shall give the money, with which the excess number of them is to be redeemed, unto Aharon and to his sons.”

3:49And Moshe took the redemption money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levi’im;

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
