Numbers, Chapter 11

Fire from Hashem burns at Taverah; the people weep for flesh, and Moshe says he cannot bear them alone; Hashem puts the spirit on seventy elders, Eldad and Medad prophesy in the camp, and quails are given, but a plague strikes the people at Kivrot HaTa’avah.

The fire at Taverah

11:1And when the people complained, it displeased Hashem; and Hashem heard it, and His anger was kindled; and the fire of Hashem burned among them, and consumed those that were in the outermost parts of the camp.

11:2And the people cried unto Moshe (Moses); and when Moshe prayed unto Hashem, the fire was quenched.

11:3And he called the name of the place Taverah (Taberah), because the fire of Hashem burned among them.

The people weep for flesh

11:4And the mixed multitude that was among them fell to lusting; and the children of Yisrael (Israel) also wept again, and said, “Who shall give us flesh to eat?

11:5We remember the fish, which we ate in Mitzrayim (Egypt) freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic.

11:6But now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all, except this manna, before our eyes.”

11:7And the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium.

11:8And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.

11:9And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

Moshe’s complaint

11:10Then Moshe heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of Hashem was kindled greatly; and Moshe was displeased.

11:11And Moshe said unto Hashem, “Why have You afflicted Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You lay the burden of all this people upon me?

11:12Have I conceived all this people? Have I begotten them, that You should say unto me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nursing father carries the nursing child,’ unto the land which You swore unto their fathers?

11:13Where should I get flesh to give unto all this people? For they weep unto me, saying, ‘Give us flesh, that we may eat.’

11:14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

11:15And if You deal thus with me, kill me, I pray You, out of hand, if I have found favor in Your sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.”

The seventy elders

11:16And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Yisrael, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with you.

11:17And I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon you, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you bear it not yourself alone.

11:18And say unto the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat flesh; for you have wept in the ears of Hashem, saying, “Who shall give us flesh to eat? For it was well with us in Mitzrayim.” Therefore Hashem will give you flesh, and you shall eat.

11:19You shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days;

11:20but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome unto you; because you have despised Hashem who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we come forth out of Mitzrayim?”’”

11:21And Moshe said, “The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and You have said, ‘I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.’

11:22Shall flocks and herds be slain for them, to suffice them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?”

11:23And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Has Hashem’s hand grown short? Now you shall see whether My word shall come to pass unto you or not.”

11:24And Moshe went out, and told the people the words of Hashem, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

11:25And Hashem came down in a cloud, and spoke unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders; and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

Eldad and Medad

11:26But there remained two of the men in the camp; the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of those that were written, but did not go out unto the tabernacle; and they prophesied in the camp.

11:27And a young man ran, and told Moshe, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

11:28And Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun, the servant of Moshe, one of his young men, answered and said, “My lord Moshe, forbid them.”

11:29And Moshe said unto him, “Are you envious for my sake? Would God that all Hashem’s people were prophets, and that Hashem would put His spirit upon them!”

11:30And Moshe went back into the camp, he and the elders of Yisrael.

The quails

11:31And there went forth a wind from Hashem, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and about a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

11:32And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails; he that gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

11:33And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of Hashem was kindled against the people, and Hashem struck the people with a very great plague.

11:34And he called the name of that place Kivrot HaTa’avah (Kibroth-hattaavah), because there they buried the people that lusted.

11:35And the people journeyed from Kivrot HaTa’avah unto Ḥatzerot (Hazeroth); and abode at Ḥatzerot.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
