Text (469) 608-9944Nehemiah, Chapter 4
Sanvallat, Toviyah, the Arvim, the Ammonim and the Ashdodim conspire to fight against Yerushalayim; Nechemyah prays and sets a watch, half his servants work while half hold weapons, the builders work with swords at their sides and the shofar near him, and none put off their clothes.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–17 here are 4:7–23 in most English Bibles. Verses 4:1–6 of most English Bibles are 3:33–38 here.
4:1But it came to pass, that when Sanvallat (Sanballat), and Toviyah (Tobiah), and the Arvim (Arabians), and the Ammonim (Ammonites), and the Ashdodim (Ashdodites), heard that the walls of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very angry,
4:2And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Yerushalayim, and to hinder it.
4:3Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
4:4And Yehudah (Judah) said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.”
4:5And our adversaries said, “They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.”
4:6And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, “From all places whence you shall return unto us they will be upon you.”
4:7Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:8And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Be not you afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
4:9And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
4:10And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Yehudah.
4:11They which builded on the wall, and they that bore burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
4:12For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the shofar (trumpet) was by me.
4:13And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
4:14In what place therefore you hear the sound of the shofar, resort you thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.”
4:15So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
4:16Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, “Let every one with his servant lodge within Yerushalayim, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.”
4:17So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Nehemiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
