Text (469) 608-9944Nehemiah, Chapter 10
The people make a sure covenant, sealed by Nechemyah the Tirshata, the priests, the Levi’im and the chiefs of the people; all swear to walk in God’s Torah, to keep from marrying the peoples of the land, to keep the sabbath and the seventh year, and to bring the shekel, wood offering, firstfruits and tithes.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 9:38 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–40 here are 10:1–39 in most English Bibles.
10:1And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levi’im (Levites), and priests, seal unto it.

10:29And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levi’im, the porters, the singers, the Netinim (Nethinims), and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the Torah of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
10:30They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s Torah, which was given by Moshe (Moses) the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of Hashem our Lord, and His judgments and His statutes;
10:31And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:
10:32And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.
10:33Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;
10:34For the showbread, and for the continual meal offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
10:35And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levi’im, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of Hashem our God, as it is written in the Torah:
10:36And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of Hashem:
10:37Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the Torah, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:
10:38And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levi’im, that the same Levi’im might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.
10:39And the priest the son of Aharon (Aaron) shall be with the Levi’im, when the Levi’im take tithes: and the Levi’im shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.
10:40For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Nehemiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
