Text (469) 608-9944Nahum, Chapter 2
Good tidings of peace come upon the mountains to Yehudah; he that dashes in pieces comes up against Ninveh, the chariots rage in the streets, the gates of the rivers are opened, the city is spoiled of silver and gold, and the den of the lions is no more, for Hashem of hosts is against her.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 1:15 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–14 here are 2:1–13 in most English Bibles.
2:1Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace! O Yehudah (Judah), keep your solemn feasts, perform your vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through you; he is utterly cut off.
2:2He that dashes in pieces is come up before your face: keep the munition, watch the way, make your loins strong, fortify your power mightily.
2:3For Hashem has turned away the excellency of Ya’akov (Jacob), as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.
2:4The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.
2:5The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.
2:6He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.
2:7The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.
2:8And Hutzav (Huzzab) shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.
2:9But Ninveh (Nineveh) is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. “Stand, stand,” shall they cry; but none shall look back.
2:10Take you the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.
2:11She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melts, and the knees strike together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
2:12Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?
2:13The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.
2:14Behold, I am against you, says Hashem of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions: and I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no more be heard.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Nahum they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1 and 2; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
