Text (469) 608-9944Micah, Chapter 2
Woe to those who devise iniquity upon their beds and take fields and houses by violence; Hashem devises an evil against that family, the people forbid the prophets to prophesy and would take a prophet of wine and strong drink, and Hashem promises to gather the remnant of Israel with the breaker and their king before them.
2:1Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.
2:2And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.
2:3Therefore thus says Hashem: “Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which you shall not remove your necks; neither shall you go haughtily: for this time is evil.
2:4In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, ‘We are utterly spoiled: he has changed the portion of my people: how has he removed it from me! turning away he has divided our fields.’
2:5Therefore you shall have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of Hashem.”
2:6“Prophesy you not,” say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.
2:7O you that are named the house of Ya’akov (Jacob), is the spirit of Hashem straitened? are these His doings? do not My words do good to him that walks uprightly?
2:8Even of late My people is risen up as an enemy: you pull off the robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men averse from war.
2:9The women of My people have you cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have you taken away My glory for ever.
2:10Arise you, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.
2:11If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, “I will prophesy unto you of wine and of strong drink;” he shall even be the prophet of this people.
2:12I will surely assemble, O Ya’akov, all of you; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Botzrah (Bozrah), as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.
2:13The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and Hashem on the head of them.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Micah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
