Text (469) 608-9944Leviticus, Chapter 5
Withholding testimony, touching uncleanness and rash oaths are atoned for by a lamb or goat, two birds, or flour for the poor; a ram is brought as a trespass offering for trespass in holy things, for unknown sins, and for dealing falsely with a neighbor, with restitution and a fifth added.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 20–26 here are 6:1–7 in most English Bibles.
5:1“And if a soul sins, and hears the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he has seen or known of it; if he does not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
5:2Or if a soul touches any unclean thing, whether it is a carcass of an unclean beast, or a carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of unclean creeping things, and if it is hidden from him, he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
5:3Or if he touches the uncleanness of man, whatever uncleanness it is with which a man shall be defiled, and it is hidden from him; when he knows of it, then he shall be guilty.
5:4Or if a soul swears, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatever it is that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it is hidden from him; when he knows of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
5:5And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he has sinned in that thing;
5:6and he shall bring his trespass offering unto Hashem for his sin which he has sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.
5:7And if he is not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he has committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto Hashem: one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.
5:8And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off its head from its neck, but shall not divide it asunder.
5:9And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung out at the bottom of the altar. It is a sin offering.
5:10And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner; and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he has sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.
5:11But if he is not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense on it; for it is a sin offering.
5:12Then he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it, even a memorial of it, and burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto Hashem. It is a sin offering.
5:13And the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin that he has sinned in one of these, and it shall be forgiven him; and the remnant shall be the priest’s, as a meal offering.’”
5:14And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,
5:15“If a soul commits a trespass, and sins through ignorance, in the holy things of Hashem, then he shall bring for his trespass unto Hashem a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with your estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering.
5:16And he shall make amends for the harm that he has done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part to it, and give it unto the priest; and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.
5:17And if a soul sins, and commits any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of Hashem, though he did not know it, yet he is guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
5:18And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with your estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance in which he erred and did not know it, and it shall be forgiven him.
5:19It is a trespass offering; he has certainly trespassed against Hashem.”
5:20And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
5:21“If a soul sins, and commits a trespass against Hashem, and lies unto his neighbor in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or has deceived his neighbor;
5:22or has found that which was lost, and lies concerning it, and swears falsely; in any of all these that a man does, sinning therein:
5:23then it shall be, because he has sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he has deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,
5:24or all that about which he has sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more to it, and give it unto him to whom it belongs, in the day of his trespass offering.
5:25And he shall bring his trespass offering unto Hashem, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with your estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest.
5:26And the priest shall make an atonement for him before Hashem; and it shall be forgiven him for anything of all that he has done in trespassing therein.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
