Leviticus, Chapter 21

Laws of holiness for the priests, the sons of Aharon: when they may be defiled for the dead, their mourning, and whom they may marry; stricter laws for the high priest; and the rule that no son of Aharon with a blemish may offer the bread of his God.

The holiness of the priests

21:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Speak unto the priests the sons of Aharon (Aaron), and say unto them, ‘None shall be defiled for the dead among his people,

21:2except for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother,

21:3and for his sister a virgin, that is near unto him, who has had no husband; for her may he be defiled.

21:4But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.

21:5They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

Written and read. Written יקרחה, read יִקְרְח֤וּ. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

21:6They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God; for the offerings of Hashem made by fire, the bread of their God, they offer; therefore they shall be holy.

21:7They shall not take a wife that is a harlot, or profaned; neither shall they take a woman divorced from her husband; for he is holy unto his God.

21:8You shall sanctify him therefore; for he offers the bread of your God; he shall be holy unto you; for I Hashem, who sanctify you, am holy.

21:9And the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by playing the harlot, she profanes her father; she shall be burnt with fire.

The high priest

21:10And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not let his hair go loose, nor rend his clothes;

21:11neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;

21:12neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am Hashem.

21:13And he shall take a wife in her virginity.

21:14A widow, or a divorced woman, or a profaned woman, or a harlot, these shall he not take; but he shall take a virgin of his own people for a wife.

21:15Neither shall he profane his seed among his people; for I Hashem do sanctify him.’”

Priests with a blemish

21:16And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

21:17“Speak unto Aharon, saying, ‘Whoever he is of your seed in their generations that has any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.

21:18For whatever man he is that has a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that has a flat nose, or anything disproportioned,

21:19or a man that is broken-footed, or broken-handed,

21:20or hunchbacked, or a dwarf, or that has a blemish in his eye, or has a scab, or a skin eruption, or has crushed testicles.

21:21No man that has a blemish of the seed of Aharon the priest shall come near to offer the offerings of Hashem made by fire; he has a blemish; he shall not come near to offer the bread of his God.

21:22He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy.

21:23Only he shall not go in unto the veil, nor come near unto the altar, because he has a blemish; that he not profane My sanctuaries; for I Hashem do sanctify them.’”

21:24And Moshe told it unto Aharon, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Yisrael (Israel).

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
