Lamentations, Chapter 5

The people ask Hashem to remember their reproach: their inheritance is given to strangers, they are orphans under servants, the women are ravished and the elders dishonoured, and mount Tziyon lies desolate; Hashem remains for ever, and they pray Him to turn them to Himself and renew their days as of old.

5:1Remember, O Hashem, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.

5:2Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.

5:3We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.

5:4We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.

5:5Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.

5:6We have given the hand to Mitzrayim (the Egyptians), and to Ashur (the Assyrians), to be satisfied with bread.

5:7Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.

5:8Servants have ruled over us: there is none that does deliver us out of their hand.

5:9We got our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

5:10Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.

5:11They ravished the women in Tziyon (Zion), and the maids in the cities of Yehudah (Judah).

5:12Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured.

5:13They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.

5:14The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music.

5:15The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.

5:16The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!

5:17For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.

5:18Because of the mountain of Tziyon, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.

Renew our days as of old

5:19You, O Hashem, remain for ever; Your throne from generation to generation.

5:20Wherefore do You forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?

5:21Turn You us unto You, O Hashem, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

5:22But You have utterly rejected us; You are very angry against us.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Lamentations they are the same as in most English Bibles.
