Judges, Chapter 5

The song of Devorah and Barak: Hashem marches out of Se’ir, the land lies desolate until Devorah arises, the tribes that came to the battle and those that stayed away, the kings of Kena’an fight at Ta’nach and the river Kishon, Yael strikes Sisera, and his mother waits for him at the window.

5:1Then sang Devorah (Deborah) and Barak the son of Avino’am (Abinoam) on that day, saying,

5:2Praise Hashem for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.

5:3Hear, O you kings; give ear, O you princes; I, even I, will sing unto Hashem; I will sing praise to Hashem God of Israel.

5:4Hashem, when You went out of Se’ir (Seir), when You marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.

5:5The mountains melted from before Hashem, even that Sinai from before Hashem God of Israel.

A mother in Israel

5:6In the days of Shamgar the son of Anat (Anath), in the days of Yael (Jael), the highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through byways.

5:7The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Devorah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.

5:8They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

5:9My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless Hashem.

5:10Speak, you that ride on white donkeys, you that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.

5:11They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Hashem, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of Hashem go down to the gates.

The tribes that came and stayed away

5:12Awake, awake, Devorah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead your captivity captive, you son of Avino’am.

5:13Then he made him that remains have dominion over the nobles among the people: Hashem made me have dominion over the mighty.

5:14Out of Efrayim (Ephraim) was there a root of them against Amalek; after you, Binyamin (Benjamin), among your people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zevulun (Zebulun) they that handle the pen of the writer.

5:15And the princes of Yissachar (Issachar) were with Devorah; even Yissachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Re’uven (Reuben) there were great thoughts of heart.

5:16Why abode you among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Re’uven there were great searchings of heart.

5:17Gil’ad (Gilead) abode beyond Yarden (Jordan): and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.

5:18Zevulun and Naftali (Naphtali) were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.

The battle by the waters of Megiddo

5:19The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Kena’an (Canaan) in Ta’nach (Taanach) by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.

5:20They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.

5:21The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, you have trodden down strength.

5:22Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the prancings, the prancings of their mighty ones.

5:23“Curse Meroz,” said the angel of Hashem, “curse bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of Hashem, to the help of Hashem against the mighty.”

Blessed above women

5:24Blessed above women shall Yael the wife of Chever (Heber) the Keini (Kenite) be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

5:25He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.

5:26She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she struck Sisera, she struck off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.

5:27At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

The mother of Sisera

5:28The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, “Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?”

5:29Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,

5:30“Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?”

5:31So let all Your enemies perish, O Hashem: but let them that love Him be as the sun when he goes forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Judges they are the same as in most English Bibles.
