Text (469) 608-9944Judges, Chapter 3
The nations left in the land to prove Israel; Hashem sells Israel to Kushan Rish’atayim and Otni’el son of Kenaz delivers them; Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Binyamini, slays Eglon king of Mo’av and Israel subdues Mo’av; and Shamgar son of Anat slays six hundred Pelishtim with an ox goad.
3:1Now these are the nations which Hashem left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Kena’an (Canaan);
3:2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3:3Namely, five lords of the Pelishtim (Philistines), and all the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and the Tzidoni (Sidonians), and the Chivi (Hivites) that dwelt in mount Levanon (Lebanon), from mount Ba’al Chermon (Baal-hermon) unto the entering in of Chamat (Hamath).
3:4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Hashem, which He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moshe (Moses).
3:5And the children of Israel dwelt among the Kena’ani, Chitti (Hittites), and Emori (Amorites), and Perizzi (Perizzites), and Chivi, and Yevusi (Jebusites):
3:6And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
3:7And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Hashem, and forgot Hashem their God, and served Be’alim (Baalim) and the groves.
3:8Therefore the anger of Hashem was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Kushan Rish’atayim (Chushan-rishathaim) king of Aram Naharayim (Mesopotamia): and the children of Israel served Kushan Rish’atayim eight years.
3:9And when the children of Israel cried unto Hashem, Hashem raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Otni’el (Othniel) the son of Kenaz, Kalev’s (Caleb’s) younger brother.
3:10And the Spirit of Hashem came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and Hashem delivered Kushan Rish’atayim king of Aram into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Kushan Rish’atayim.
3:11And the land had rest forty years. And Otni’el the son of Kenaz died.
3:12And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of Hashem: and Hashem strengthened Eglon the king of Mo’av (Moab) against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of Hashem.
3:13And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and struck Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
3:14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Mo’av eighteen years.
3:15But when the children of Israel cried unto Hashem, Hashem raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Binyamini (Benjamite), a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Mo’av.
3:16But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
3:17And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Mo’av: and Eglon was a very fat man.
3:18And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bore the present.
3:19But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand unto you, O king:” who said, “Keep silence.” And all that stood by him went out from him.
3:20And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God unto you.” And he arose out of his seat.
3:21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
3:22And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
3:23Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
3:24When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, “Surely he covers his feet in his summer chamber.”
3:25And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
3:26And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Se’irah (Seirath).
3:27And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a shofar (trumpet) in the mountain of Efrayim (Ephraim), and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
3:28And he said unto them, “Follow after me: for Hashem has delivered your enemies Mo’av into your hand.” And they went down after him, and took the fords of Yarden (Jordan) toward Mo’av, and suffered not a man to pass over.
3:29And they slew of Mo’av at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
3:30So Mo’av was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.
3:31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anat (Anath), which slew of the Pelishtim six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Judges they are the same as in most English Bibles.
