Judges, Chapter 12

The men of Efrayim threaten Yiftach, the men of Gil’ad defeat them and test the fugitives at the fords of the Yarden with the word Shibboleth; Yiftach dies, and Ivtzan of Beit Lechem, Elon the Zevuloni and Avdon the Pir’atoni judge Israel after him.

12:1And the men of Efrayim (Ephraim) gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Yiftach (Jephthah), “Wherefore passed you over to fight against the children of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? we will burn your house upon you with fire.”

12:2And Yiftach said unto them, “I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you delivered me not out of their hands.

12:3And when I saw that you delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Hashem delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are you come up unto me this day, to fight against me?”

Shibboleth

12:4Then Yiftach gathered together all the men of Gil’ad (Gilead), and fought with Efrayim: and the men of Gil’ad struck Efrayim, because they said, “You Gil’adim (Gileadites) are fugitives of Efrayim among Efrayim (the Ephraimites), and among Menashe (the Manassites).”

12:5And the Gil’adim took the passages of Yarden (Jordan) before Efrayim: and it was so, that when those of Efrayim which were escaped said, “Let me go over;” that the men of Gil’ad said unto him, “Are you an Efrati (Ephraimite)?” If he said, “Nay;”

12:6Then said they unto him, “Say now Shibboleth:” and he said “Sibboleth:” for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Yarden: and there fell at that time of Efrayim forty and two thousand.

12:7And Yiftach judged Israel six years. Then died Yiftach the Gil’adi (Gileadite), and was buried in one of the cities of Gil’ad.

Ivtzan, Elon and Avdon

12:8And after him Ivtzan (Ibzan) of Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) judged Israel.

12:9And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

12:10Then died Ivtzan, and was buried at Beit Lechem.

12:11And after him Elon, a Zevuloni (Zebulonite), judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

12:12And Elon the Zevuloni died, and was buried in Ayalon (Aijalon) in the country of Zevulun (Zebulun).

12:13And after him Avdon (Abdon) the son of Hillel, a Pir’atoni (Pirathonite), judged Israel.

12:14And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on seventy donkey colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

12:15And Avdon the son of Hillel the Pir’atoni died, and was buried in Pir’aton (Pirathon) in the land of Efrayim, in the mount of the Amaleki (Amalekites).

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Judges they are the same as in most English Bibles.
