Judges, Chapter 10

Tola of Yissachar and Ya’ir the Gil’adi judge Israel; Israel serves the Be’alim and the gods of the nations, Hashem sells them to the Pelishtim and Ammon, and when they cry out He rebukes them; they put away the strange gods, and Ammon gathers against Gil’ad.

10:1And after Avimelech (Abimelech) there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Pu’ah (Puah), the son of Dodo, a man of Yissachar (Issachar); and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Efrayim (Ephraim).

10:2And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

10:3And after him arose Ya’ir (Jair), a Gil’adi (Gileadite), and judged Israel twenty and two years.

10:4And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty donkey colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Chavot Ya’ir (Havoth-jair) unto this day, which are in the land of Gil’ad (Gilead).

10:5And Ya’ir died, and was buried in Kamon (Camon).

Israel serves other gods

10:6And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of Hashem, and served Be’alim (Baalim), and Ashtarot (Ashtaroth), and the gods of Aram (Syria), and the gods of Tzidon (Zidon), and the gods of Mo’av (Moab), and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Pelishtim (Philistines), and forsook Hashem, and served not Him.

10:7And the anger of Hashem was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Pelishtim, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

10:8And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Yarden (Jordan) in the land of the Emori (Amorites), which is in Gil’ad.

10:9Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Yarden to fight also against Yehudah (Judah), and against Binyamin (Benjamin), and against the house of Efrayim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

Israel cries to Hashem

10:10And the children of Israel cried unto Hashem, saying, “We have sinned against You, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Be’alim.”

10:11And Hashem said unto the children of Israel, “Did not I deliver you from Mitzrayim (the Egyptians), and from the Emori, from the children of Ammon, and from the Pelishtim?

10:12The Tzidonim (Zidonians) also, and Amalek (the Amalekites), and Ma’on (the Maonites), did oppress you; and you cried to Me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

10:13Yet you have forsaken Me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

10:14Go and cry unto the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.”

10:15And the children of Israel said unto Hashem, “We have sinned: do You unto us whatsoever seems good unto You; deliver us only, we pray You, this day.”

10:16And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Hashem: and His soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

Ammon gathers against Gil’ad

10:17Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gil’ad. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mitzpah (Mizpeh).

10:18And the people and princes of Gil’ad said one to another, “What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gil’ad.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Judges they are the same as in most English Bibles.
