Joshua, Chapter 9

The kings of the land gather to fight Israel, but the inhabitants of Givon come to Gilgal with old sacks, worn wine bottles, old shoes and dry bread, as if from a far country; Israel makes a covenant with them without asking counsel of Hashem, and when the deceit is found out Yehoshua makes them hewers of wood and drawers of water.

9:1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Yarden (Jordan), in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Levanon (Lebanon), the Chitti (Hittite), and the Emori (Amorite), the Kena’ani (Canaanite), the Perizzi (Perizzite), the Chivi (Hivite), and the Yevusi (Jebusite), heard thereof;

9:2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Yehoshua (Joshua) and with Israel, with one accord.

The men of Givon come to Gilgal

9:3And when the inhabitants of Givon (Gibeon) heard what Yehoshua had done unto Yericho (Jericho) and to Ai,

9:4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their donkeys, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

9:5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

9:6And they went to Yehoshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, “We are come from a far country: now therefore make you a covenant with us.”

9:7And the men of Israel said unto the Chivi, “Peradventure you dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?”

9:8And they said unto Yehoshua, “We are your servants.” And Yehoshua said unto them, “Who are you? and from whence come you?”

9:9And they said unto him, “From a very far country your servants are come because of the name of Hashem your God: for we have heard the fame of Him, and all that He did in Mitzrayim (Egypt),

9:10And all that He did to the two kings of the Emori, that were beyond Yarden, to Sichon (Sihon) king of Cheshbon (Heshbon), and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtarot (Ashtaroth).

9:11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, “We are your servants: therefore now make you a covenant with us.”’

9:12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

9:13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.”

9:14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Hashem.

9:15And Yehoshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.

The deceit is found out

9:16And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

9:17And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Givon, and Kefirah (Chephirah), and Be’erot (Beeroth), and Kiryat Ye’arim (Kirjath-jearim).

9:18And the children of Israel struck them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Hashem God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

9:19But all the princes said unto all the congregation, “We have sworn unto them by Hashem God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

9:20This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.”

9:21And the princes said unto them, “Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation;” as the princes had promised them.

Hewers of wood and drawers of water

9:22And Yehoshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, “Wherefore have you beguiled us, saying, ‘We are very far from you;’ when you dwell among us?

9:23Now therefore you are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

9:24And they answered Yehoshua, and said, “Because it was certainly told your servants, how that Hashem your God commanded His servant Moshe (Moses) to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

9:25And now, behold, we are in your hand: as it seems good and right unto you to do unto us, do.”

9:26And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

9:27And Yehoshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Hashem, even unto this day, in the place which He should choose.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Joshua they are the same as in most English Bibles.
