Text (469) 608-9944Joshua, Chapter 24
Yehoshua gathers the tribes at Shechem and recounts Hashem’s deeds from Terach and Avraham to the conquest; the people choose to serve Hashem, Yehoshua makes a covenant and sets up a stone of witness, and Yehoshua and El’azar die and are buried, as are Yosef’s bones in Shechem.
24:1And Yehoshua (Joshua) gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
24:2And Yehoshua said unto all the people, “Thus says Hashem God of Israel, ‘Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terach (Terah), the father of Avraham (Abraham), and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
24:3And I took your father Avraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Kena’an (Canaan), and multiplied his seed, and gave him Yitzchak (Isaac).
24:4And I gave unto Yitzchak Ya’akov (Jacob) and Esav (Esau): and I gave unto Esav mount Se’ir (Seir), to possess it; but Ya’akov and his children went down into Mitzrayim (Egypt).
24:5I sent Moshe (Moses) also and Aharon (Aaron), and I plagued Mitzrayim, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
24:6And I brought your fathers out of Mitzrayim: and you came unto the sea; and Mitzrayim (the Egyptians) pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto Yam Suf (the Red sea).
24:7And when they cried unto Hashem, He put darkness between you and the Mitzrim (Egyptians), and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Mitzrayim: and you dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
24:8And I brought you into the land of the Emori (Amorites), which dwelt on the other side Yarden (Jordan); and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that you might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
24:9Then Balak the son of Tzipor (Zippor), king of Mo’av (Moab), arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Bil’am (Balaam) the son of Be’or (Beor) to curse you:
24:10But I would not hearken unto Bil’am; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
24:11And you went over Yarden, and came unto Yericho (Jericho): and the men of Yericho fought against you, the Emori, and the Perizzi (Perizzites), and the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and the Chitti (Hittites), and the Girgashi (Girgashites), the Chivi (Hivites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites); and I delivered them into your hand.
24:12And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Emori; but not with your sword, nor with your bow.
24:13And I have given you a land for which you did not labour, and cities which you built not, and you dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which you planted not do you eat.’
24:14Now therefore fear Hashem, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Mitzrayim; and serve you Hashem.
24:15And if it seem evil unto you to serve Hashem, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Emori, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Hashem.”
24:16And the people answered and said, “God forbid that we should forsake Hashem, to serve other gods;
24:17For Hashem our God, He it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Mitzrayim, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
24:18And Hashem drove out from before us all the people, even the Emori which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve Hashem; for He is our God.”
24:19And Yehoshua said unto the people, “You cannot serve Hashem: for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
24:20If you forsake Hashem, and serve strange gods, then He will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that He has done you good.”
24:21And the people said unto Yehoshua, “Nay; but we will serve Hashem.”
24:22And Yehoshua said unto the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen you Hashem, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.”
24:23“Now therefore put away,” said he, “the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Hashem God of Israel.”
24:24And the people said unto Yehoshua, “Hashem our God will we serve, and His voice will we obey.”
24:25So Yehoshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
24:26And Yehoshua wrote these words in the book of the Torah of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of Hashem.
24:27And Yehoshua said unto all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it has heard all the words of Hashem which He spoke unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest you deny your God.”
24:28So Yehoshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
24:29And it came to pass after these things, that Yehoshua the son of Nun, the servant of Hashem, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
24:30And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnat-Serach (Timnath-serah), which is in mount Efrayim (Ephraim), on the north side of the hill of Ga’ash (Gaash).
24:31And Israel served Hashem all the days of Yehoshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Yehoshua, and which had known all the works of Hashem, that He had done for Israel.
24:32And the bones of Yosef (Joseph), which the children of Israel brought up out of Mitzrayim, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Ya’akov bought of the sons of Chamor (Hamor) the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Yosef.
24:33And El’azar (Eleazar) the son of Aharon died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Pinchas (Phinehas) his son, which was given him in mount Efrayim.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
