Text (469) 608-9944Joshua, Chapter 16
The lot of the children of Yosef runs from the Yarden at Yericho through Beit El to Gezer and the sea; the borders of Efrayim’s inheritance are traced, and the Kena’ani who dwell in Gezer are not driven out.
16:1And the lot of the children of Yosef (Joseph) fell from Yarden (Jordan) by Yericho (Jericho), unto the water of Yericho on the east, to the wilderness that goes up from Yericho throughout mount Beit El (Bethel),
16:2And goes out from Beit El to Luz, and passes along unto the borders of Arki (Archi) to Atarot (Ataroth),
16:3And goes down westward to the coast of Yafleti (Japhleti), unto the coast of Beit Choron (Beth-horon) the nether, and to Gezer: and the goings out thereof are at the sea.
16:4So the children of Yosef, Menashe (Manasseh) and Efrayim (Ephraim), took their inheritance.
16:5And the border of the children of Efrayim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Atrot Adar (Ataroth-addar), unto Beit Choron the upper;
16:6And the border went out toward the sea to Michmetat (Michmethah) on the north side; and the border went about eastward unto Ta’anat Shiloh (Taanath-shiloh), and passed by it on the east to Yanochah (Janohah);
16:7And it went down from Yanochah to Atarot, and to Na’arat (Naarath), and came to Yericho, and went out at Yarden.
16:8The border went out from Tapuach (Tappuah) westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Efrayim by their families.
16:9And the separate cities for the children of Efrayim were among the inheritance of the children of Menashe, all the cities with their villages.
16:10And they drove not out the Kena’ani (Canaanites) that dwelt in Gezer: but the Kena’ani dwell among Efrayim unto this day, and serve under tribute.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Joshua they are the same as in most English Bibles.
- Hebrew font
