Jonah, Chapter 1

Hashem sends Yonah son of Amittai to cry against Ninveh, but he flees toward Tarshish; Hashem sends a great tempest, the lot falls on Yonah, and at his word the mariners cast him into the sea, which ceases from its raging, and the men fear Hashem and make vows.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1:17 of most English Bibles is 2:1 here.

1:1Now the word of Hashem came unto Yonah (Jonah) the son of Amittai, saying,

1:2“Arise, go to Ninveh (Nineveh), that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me.”

1:3But Yonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Hashem, and went down to Yafo (Joppa); and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Hashem.

The great tempest

1:4But Hashem sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

1:5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Yonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

1:6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, “What do you mean, O sleeper? arise, call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.”

The lot falls on Yonah

1:7And they said every one to his fellow, “Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Yonah.

1:8Then said they unto him, “Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is your occupation? and whence do you come? what is your country? and of what people are you?”

1:9And he said unto them, “I am an Hebrew; and I fear Hashem, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land.”

1:10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Hashem, because he had told them.

1:11Then said they unto him, “What shall we do unto you, that the sea may be calm unto us?” for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

1:12And he said unto them, “Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.”

1:13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

Yonah cast into the sea

1:14Wherefore they cried unto Hashem, and said, “We beseech You, O Hashem, we beseech You, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for You, O Hashem, have done as it pleased You.”

1:15So they took up Yonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

1:16Then the men feared Hashem exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto Hashem, and made vows.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jonah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1 and 2; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
