Text (469) 608-9944Joel, Chapter 3
Hashem promises to pour out His spirit upon all flesh, on sons and daughters, old men and young men, servants and handmaids; He shows wonders in heaven and earth before the great and terrible day of Hashem, and whoever calls on His name shall be delivered in mount Tziyon and Yerushalayim.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–5 here are 2:28–32 in most English Bibles. Verses 3:1–21 of most English Bibles are 4:1–21 here.
3:1And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
3:2And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My spirit.
בוְגַ֥ם עַל־הָֽעֲבָדִ֖ים וְעַל־הַשְּׁפָח֑וֹת בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔מָּה אֶשְׁפּ֖וֹךְ אֶת־רוּחִֽי׃
3:3And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
גוְנָֽתַתִּי֙ מֽוֹפְתִ֔ים בַּשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּבָאָ֑רֶץ דָּ֣ם וָאֵ֔שׁ וְתִֽימֲר֖וֹת עָשָֽׁן׃
3:4The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of Hashem come.
דהַשֶּׁ֨מֶשׁ֙ יֵהָפֵ֣ךְ לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ וְהַיָּרֵ֖חַ לְדָ֑ם לִפְנֵ֗י בּ֚וֹא י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה הַגָּד֖וֹל וְהַנּוֹרָֽא׃
3:5And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Hashem shall be delivered: for in mount Tziyon (Zion) and in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) shall be deliverance, as Hashem has said, and in the remnant whom Hashem shall call.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Joel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 2, 3 and 4; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
