Job, Chapter 6

איוב ו

Iyov answers that his grief is heavier than the sand of the sea, for the arrows of the Almighty are within him; he longs for God to cut him off, says his brethren have failed him like a brook that dries up, and asks them to teach him wherein he has erred.

6:1But Iyov (Job) answered and said,

אוַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

6:2“O that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!

בל֗וּ שָׁק֣וֹל יִשָּׁקֵ֣ל כַּעְשִׂ֑י וְ֝הַוָּתִ֗י (כתיב והיתי) בְּֽמֹאזְנַ֥יִם יִשְׂאוּ־יָֽחַד׃

6:3For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

גכִּֽי־עַתָּ֗ה מֵח֣וֹל יַמִּ֣ים יִכְבָּ֑ד עַל־כֵּ֝֗ן דְּבָרַ֥י לָֽעוּ׃

6:4For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

דכִּ֤י חִצֵּ֪י שַׁדַּ֡י עִמָּדִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲ֭מָתָם שֹׁתָ֣ה רוּחִ֑י בִּעוּתֵ֖י אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַֽעַרְכֽוּנִי׃

6:5Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? or lows the ox over his fodder?

ההֲיִֽנְהַק־פֶּ֥רֶא עֲלֵי־דֶ֑שֶׁא אִ֥ם יִגְעֶה־שּׁ֝֗וֹר עַל־בְּלִילֽוֹ׃

6:6Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

והֲיֵאָכֵ֣ל תָּ֭פֵל מִבְּלִי־מֶ֑לַח אִם־יֶשׁ־טַ֝֗עַם בְּרִ֣יר חַלָּמֽוּת׃

6:7The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful food.

זמֵאֲנָ֣ה לִנְגּ֣וֹעַ נַפְשִׁ֑י הֵ֝֗מָּה כִּדְוֵ֥י לַחְמִֽי׃

O that God would cut me off

6:8Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

חמִֽי־יִ֭תֵּן תָּב֣וֹא שֶֽׁאֱלָתִ֑י וְ֝תִקְוָתִ֗י יִתֵּ֥ן אֱלֽוֹהַּ׃

6:9Even that it would please God to destroy me; that He would let loose His hand, and cut me off!

טוְיֹאֵ֣ל אֱ֭לוֹהַּ וִֽידַכְּאֵ֑נִי יַתֵּ֥ר יָ֝ד֗וֹ וִֽיבַצְּעֵֽנִי׃

6:10Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let Him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

יוּ֥תְהִי ע֨וֹד ׀ נֶ֘חָ֤מָתִ֗י וַאֲסַלְּדָ֣ה בְ֭חִילָה לֹ֣א יַחְמ֑וֹל כִּי־לֹ֥א כִ֝חַ֗דְתִּי אִמְרֵ֥י קָדֽוֹשׁ׃

6:11What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

יאמַה־כֹּחִ֥י כִֽי־אֲיַחֵ֑ל וּמַה־קִּ֝צִּ֗י כִּֽי־אַאֲרִ֥יךְ נַפְשִֽׁי׃

6:12Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of bronze?

יבאִם־כֹּ֣חַ אֲבָנִ֣ים כֹּחִ֑י אִֽם־בְּשָׂרִ֥י נָחֽוּשׁ׃

6:13Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?

יגהַאִ֬ם אֵ֣ין עֶזְרָתִ֣י בִ֑י וְ֝תֻשִׁיָּ֗ה נִדְּחָ֥ה מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

Friends like a failing brook

6:14To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; but he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

ידלַמָּ֣ס מֵרֵעֵ֣הוּ חָ֑סֶד וְיִרְאַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יַעֲזֽוֹב׃

6:15My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;

טואַ֭חַי בָּגְד֣וּ כְמוֹ־נָ֑חַל כַּאֲפִ֖יק נְחָלִ֣ים יַעֲבֹֽרוּ׃

6:16Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:

טזהַקֹּדְרִ֥ים מִנִּי־קָ֑רַח עָ֝לֵ֗ימוֹ יִתְעַלֶּם־שָֽׁלֶג׃

6:17What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

יזבְּ֭עֵת יְזֹרְב֣וּ נִצְמָ֑תוּ בְּ֝חֻמּ֗וֹ נִדְעֲכ֥וּ מִמְּקוֹמָֽם׃

6:18The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.

יחיִ֭לָּ֣פְתוּ אָרְח֣וֹת דַּרְכָּ֑ם יַעֲל֖וּ בַתֹּ֣הוּ וְיֹאבֵֽדוּ׃

6:19The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheva (Sheba) waited for them.

יטהִ֭בִּיטוּ אָרְח֣וֹת תֵּמָ֑א הֲלִיכֹ֥ת שְׁ֝בָ֗א קִוּוּ־לָֽמוֹ׃

6:20They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.

כבֹּ֥שׁוּ כִּֽי־בָטָ֑ח בָּ֥אוּ עָ֝דֶ֗יהָ וַיֶּחְפָּֽרוּ׃

6:21For now you are like it; you see my casting down, and are afraid.

כאכִּֽי־עַ֭תָּה הֱיִ֣יתֶם ל֑וֹ (כתיב לא) תִּֽרְא֥וּ חֲ֝תַ֗ת וַתִּירָֽאוּ׃

6:22Did I say, ‘Bring unto me’? or, ‘Give a reward for me of your substance’?

כבהֲֽכִי־אָ֭מַרְתִּי הָ֣בוּ לִ֑י וּ֝מִכֹּחֲכֶ֗ם שִׁחֲד֥וּ בַעֲדִֽי׃

6:23Or, ‘Deliver me from the enemy’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the mighty’?

כגוּמַלְּט֥וּנִי מִיַּד־צָ֑ר וּמִיַּ֖ד עָרִיצִ֣ים תִּפְדּֽוּנִי׃

Teach me where I have erred

6:24Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

כדה֭וֹרוּנִי וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲרִ֑ישׁ וּמַה־שָּׁ֝גִ֗יתִי הָבִ֥ינוּ לִֽי׃

6:25How forcible are right words! but what does your arguing reprove?

כהמַה־נִּמְרְצ֥וּ אִמְרֵי־יֹ֑שֶׁר וּמַה־יּוֹכִ֖יחַ הוֹכֵ֣חַ מִכֶּֽם׃

6:26Do you imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

כוהַלְהוֹכַ֣ח מִלִּ֣ים תַּחְשֹׁ֑בוּ וּ֝לְר֗וּחַ אִמְרֵ֥י נֹאָֽשׁ׃

6:27Yea, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you dig a pit for your friend.

כזאַף־עַל־יָת֥וֹם תַּפִּ֑ילוּ וְ֝תִכְר֗וּ עַל־רֵֽיעֲכֶֽם׃

6:28Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.

כחוְ֭עַתָּה הוֹאִ֣ילוּ פְנוּ־בִ֑י וְעַל־פְּ֝נֵיכֶ֗ם אִם־אֲכַזֵּֽב׃

6:29Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.

כטשֻֽׁבוּ־נָ֭א אַל־תְּהִ֣י עַוְלָ֑ה וְשׁ֥וּבוּ (כתיב ושבי) ע֝וֹד צִדְקִי־בָֽהּ׃

6:30Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?”

להֲיֵשׁ־בִּלְשׁוֹנִ֥י עַוְלָ֑ה אִם־חִ֝כִּ֗י לֹא־יָבִ֥ין הַוּֽוֹת׃

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
