Job, Chapter 42

Iyov confesses that Hashem can do every thing and repents in dust and ashes; Hashem’s wrath is kindled against Elifaz and his two friends, Iyov prays for them, and Hashem gives Iyov twice as much as he had before, with seven sons and three daughters, and he dies old and full of days.

42:1Then Iyov (Job) answered Hashem, and said,

42:2“I know that You can do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from You.

42:3Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

42:4Hear, I beseech You, and I will speak: I will demand of You, and declare You unto me.

42:5I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees You.

42:6Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

Hashem rebukes the three friends

42:7And it was so, that after Hashem had spoken these words unto Iyov, Hashem said to Elifaz (Eliphaz) the Temani (Temanite), “My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Iyov has.

42:8Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to My servant Iyov, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Iyov shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that you have not spoken of Me the thing which is right, like My servant Iyov.”

42:9So Elifaz the Temani and Bildad the Shuchi (Shuhite) and Tzofar (Zophar) the Na’amati (Naamathite) went, and did according as Hashem commanded them: Hashem also accepted Iyov.

Hashem restores Iyov

42:10And Hashem turned the captivity of Iyov, when he prayed for his friends: also Hashem gave Iyov twice as much as he had before.

42:11Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that Hashem had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.

42:12So Hashem blessed the latter end of Iyov more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she donkeys.

The sons and daughters of Iyov

42:13He had also seven sons and three daughters.

42:14And he called the name of the first, Yemimah (Jemima); and the name of the second, Ketzi’ah (Kezia); and the name of the third, Keren-Happuch.

42:15And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Iyov: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

42:16After this lived Iyov a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

42:17So Iyov died, being old and full of days.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
