Job, Chapter 30

Iyov goes on: now men younger than he, children of fools driven forth from among men, have him in derision, make him their byword and spit in his face; his soul is poured out, God has cast him into the mire and does not answer, and his harp is turned to mourning.

30:1But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

30:2Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?

30:3For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.

30:4Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their food.

30:5They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)

30:6To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.

30:7Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.

30:8They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.

Iyov becomes their byword

30:9And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.

30:10They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.

30:11Because He has loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.

30:12Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.

30:13They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.

30:14They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.

30:15Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passes away as a cloud.

Iyov’s suffering

30:16And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

30:17My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.

30:18By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it binds me about as the collar of my coat.

30:19He has cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

Iyov cries to God

30:20I cry unto You, and You do not hear me: I stand up, and You regard me not.

30:21You are become cruel to me: with Your strong hand You oppose Yourself against me.

30:22You lift me up to the wind; You cause me to ride upon it, and dissolve my substance.

30:23For I know that You will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

30:24Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.

Iyov’s harp is turned to mourning

30:25Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?

30:26When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

30:27My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction met me.

30:28I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

30:29I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.

30:30My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.

30:31My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
